Listening to music.

Every sunday i visit my parents who live 5 train stations
away to say hello , maybe do some laundry and experience my
moms awesome coocking skills . On the train i have my cd
player and for some reason the music always becommes so much
better on that ride. Maybe it is because the train ride in
itself is so fucking boring without music or maybe it is
because my mind isnt ocupied with something else like when
im listening at home and (always) doing a bunch of other
stuff at the same time. The train always ads a bit of extra
ambience in the bakround with its noises or perhaps a kid is
crying a couple of benches away. There is also this long
walk to my home when i am back later in the evening when it
is just me walking under the street lights and the cars
passing by. Sometimes i have taken longer ways home cause
the musical experience is soo great. Tracks that i normaly
find bad becommes great even.
When i was a kid i could sit at home with headphones and
just listening to an album while staring at the album art
(aaah Iron Maiden covers =) )and be totaly consumed by it ,
doing nothing else. Nowdays that never happens , why is that
?.

Sorry, i know this kind of topic has been done to death
before but i couldn't be arsed to try and search for any ,
im to sleepy.
What are your thoughts on this ? Favorite listening places ?
Similar experiences ?

I wish i had a car , i would just drive around all night
listening to great music . Like Morrissey does =)

trains sound like a good place to listen, definitely. i
prefer to listen to music in the car..especially if someone
else is driving and doesn't mind my music.

Trains in sweden are mostly very clean + i almost allways
wear some subtle cologne like Armani or Boss (or wankshot)
to disscuise any suspicious smell i may have picked up
during the day.

My best listening experiences are usually with walkmens when
on buses, trains, and walking boring places. I have also
often extend my walk to listen more. Sometimes it pisses me
off if I bump into people I know when I am walking around in
a music-induced stupor because i have to stop listening and
talk. BOOOoooo friends suck.

i listen to music on the trains... but the train is always
so loud, i have to crank up the volume to hear it over the
white noise and clacking. maybe you have quieter trains in
sweden...

Maybe you simply had less things to distract you/worry about
as a child. Being a boring ride without the music also adds
to it for me.

My main favorite place is right before I sleep in bed. I
don't like exta ambient noises usually, especially with
really subtle music like crunch1. You're totally
undistracted too.

Haha! yeah that can be really annoying. Or the batteries run
out , what a fucking anticlimax that can be . Especialy if
you have taken the long walk and have to walk the rest
without music.

the worst thing is when ure goin back from work or school,
with a colleague, and they expect u to talk to them, and u
want to put on headphones and drift away, but ure ashamed
because ure afraid theyre goin to think that u r rude, and a
freak

Yeah falling asleep to music is great. When you are really
tired you can fall asleep to anything , even really harsh
music like grindcore or really experimental stuff. Thats the
time when you get these great mental images.

as long as you don't make eye contact/physical contact, you
can ignore people and get away with it if you're listening
to music, even if you can hear them call you, you can avoid
social friction on the next meeting by claiming to be
absorbed in audio landscapes. its a get out clause of
talking to people you don't wanna talk to with no guilt or
comeback. booyah

The trains makes some noises here to , especially these new
wagons that have these loud automatic speaker voices that
anounce destination and stuff. But that doesn't really
bother me. I guess thats why i liked the Lost In Translation
soundtrack cause it had lsome of these subway Ikebana noices
here and there . It reminded me of my magical trainrides.

If i wouldn't here any noises from the world outside my
headphones i would get a bit paranoid.
It is like when i wear a jacket with a big hood in the
winter and the hood is up i get paranoid cause the hearing
is redused and i cant see as good sideways. Someone can
easily sneak up on me from behind haha! I know that wont
happen but it is just a feeling i get in my body.
I wonder how horses feel when they have these type of
blindfolders on , it calms them right ?.

"Sometimes i have taken longer ways home cause
the musical experience is soo great." - the very same
experience

sometimes the music in my headphones would go together and
totally synchronize with traffic lights, or people walking
around - like i was in a musical or a music video.
i spent a lot of time with headphones, currently it's car
audio mp3, which is great too. when you're addicted to music
you always find a way to have it near you.

I use to have an hour commute to work and I was able to
listen to so much music. It was wonderful. Now, I can see my
office out my bedroom window, so all of my music listening
time is gone. I don't know what to do.

My minidisc player was my best friend in Japan. I have such
fond memorys of simply exhisting as an outsider in Tokyo.
The endless urban forest was mine to discover. I was encased
in my own headphones at all times. Every zip on the JR line
was a cinematic experience.

Damn it I want to redo that year again.

i find that the two best places for me are
the car, which is related to what sido says about trips to
and from him parents house, where he goes the long way just
to stay in the musics spell, i will, if i have the time,
take the longes way possible or just jump in the car and put
on a cd. when i buy a new cd, i judge whether i like or not
by listening to it for a while in the car.
while laying in bed going to sleep, which, as WMW says, it
the best for undistracted listening. when i really want to
hear something classic or something i have always loved, i
will usually play it in my discman when i am laying down for
some sleep time - the best is when you wake up and the stuff
is still playing! its like you know your subconscious was
feeling the groove.

honorable mention: i used to date this girl who would turn
on looney tunes, although it can be any cartoon, she then
would mute the sound on the tv, and then blast the stereo -
at the time she listed to rave music, basically just dance
music with a lot of techno and wierd stuff - all usa
artists, but the music would go along with the imagery so
well, i got hooked
you be surprised at how well bugs bunny and autechre blend
together!

Sounds sublime, man. I can feel the feeling in your
feelings. I used to listen to music on the bus to and from
my college. It's cliche but it's unexplainably surreal. A
lot of the students had discmans/discmen and I'd often think
about what they were listening to. It was usually trash when
I saw the CD cases on the seat or poking out of their bags.
Mine was better and I always felt good about it.

My favorite place is right here in front of my computer,
when I'm all alone. I can blast it all day long, days like
that are flawless, rewarding, and what I live for. I have
two weeks with the house totally under my control starting
on the 28th, and it's going to be a musical implosion.

And like Dann, I always take the scenic route when I'm
trotting around town with my discman. If I get to my
destination with time to burn and in the middle of a good
song, I'm go around the block again, any maybe again.

I think I creep some people out when they see me walk by,
and then walk by a few minutes later in the same direction.

Here the trains are really loud so that makes train listenin
a bit less enjoyable (I still do 2+ hours of it every day)
but an even worse distraction is schoolgirls making too much
noise on the bus.. Even if I crank the volume all the way up
the music is easily lost in the chaotic chatter of
overexcited teenagers.. It can be quite annoying if you're
listening to stuff like Stockhausen or whatever

"Mine was better and I always felt good about it."

Haha! yeah i know that feeling. Its silly really but i
always feel kind of good about myself sitting there among
all these ordinary boring mainstream people with my awesome
music.
But sometimes maybe someone cool looking person steps on
that i imediately like and i sort of get the silly urge to
hand over my headphones to them and say "Hey listen to
this , i think you would really like it" "We are the same
you and me , i am not like all the rest of these idiots
sitting here even tho i happen to wear this crappy clothes
today cause i had nothing else to wear and i am on my way to
my mother to do the laundry"

Hehe! silly...
Not that i want to make new friends or anything but its a
basic music thing. You want people to experience the same
high as you do. THats why there is so many impulsive "omg
this track omg that track!! here on this board for example
.

I am jellous of you people with cars . I think that would be
the ultimate listening experience for me. Driving at night
alone. Stop somwhere and buy a coffe to go (maybe chatt with
some lonely store clerk for a bit ) and then just keep
driving and listening. Favorite songs on repeat and stuff.
I reckon classic The Smiths sob stories like "I know its
over" would be the ultimate car music or some deep moody
dub (or whatever is good). For some reason always when i
hear the smiths i wish i was in a car with no destination.
And long monotonous ambient pieces that i find boring to
death otherwise really works on the train.

Sire : I find loud teenage girls to be the most
annoying thing in the world when i DON'T have any music.
No filter.
But with it i just think "talk all you want cause im in
another dimension"
Teenage girls talk about the most boring mundane things to
death like its something big . The teenage insecurity makes
them act so annoying.
Parents who can't handle their hyperactive annoying kids is
hell too.
So i guess your favorite listening place i
