do you purchase the music you love?

i was just wondering here how many people will go out and
buy music that they have downloaded and liked? i would say
that i will go out and buy the original edition 80% of the
time. of course, this depends on the ease of aquiring the
title, for instance, some imports run me between 20 and 25
usd. i think my limit is $25, if i have to pay more for it,
then i will just settle for the mp3 version.

yes. i dont care about downloading music because a lot of
music is ok but doesn't justify the $$$. its not doing any
damage because its something i wouldnt actually buy anway.
if i do love it i'll buy it no problem.

above all i prefer having a real physical copy of a
recording/album

i never download, i just buy and that sometimes results in
be buying crap, but most of the time i am happy with what i
get

lately though, orginal editions have become much more
important to me than a data file on my pc. i like the fact
that i own the music, not as an algorithm makes it, but as
the artist made it.

i guess, on the flip side, I HATE WHEN I BUY CRAP, i hate
when i have to go through all of the trouble of paypal,
shipping etc, only to find that the music sucks donkey
balls. it really gets to me

yes i purchase the music that LASTS (i.e., doesnt get boring
after 2 weeks of listening) on vinyl only.

i dont purchase CDs, just vinyl.

thats how ive felt every single time ive bought an album by
squarepusher :D i keep saying to myself 'the next one will
be better, its xltronic-recommended', but im disappointed
every time.

i really like squarepusher, to me he is as good as his
xlt-holiness rdj *ducks, but the last time this happened to
me was with warp, WAP100 cd, there were some good tracks,
but THAT SUCKED! i was so angry that i had spent the money
for shipping and stuff, grrrrrrr.

I do feel it's my duty to buy the album if I actually like
it. You kinda feel like you're cheating the artist if you
don't buy it.
Like I recently downloaded Bilious Paths by mu-ziq and I'll
be buying it for sure.

When I d/l, it's usually for checking out new stuff and/or
getting tunes that cost alot of dosh on eBay and such. If I
come across something I really like, I buy it. Owning a
physical copy is so much more rewarding than having a boring
MP3 file.

the music that lasts, is the music you speak of lasting for
all, or just for you? can you really say that a certain
piece of music is forever, and all listeners feel this way?
isnt all about taste? i understand the vinyl only comment,
as it is the best sound under the sun, but i am a cd man
myself.

i dont feel this way, i feel the artist is cheating me if i
go and buy crap! this is the completely wrong way to look at
it, but we are talking about business as well as art.

there have been a few times when ive heard a couple of songs
by an artist, liked them and bought their albums, only to
discover they are awful. examples- red snapper, death in

Well one example is that I going to buy 'OK Computer', as I
think it's one of the best albums I've ever heard, but when
I saw that it's still selling for $26 after all this time, I
didn't.

oh yes, absolutely.

i have discovered so much fantastic music through
peer-to-peer networks; music that if i had to buy to listen,
i'd never have discovered. if i truly enjoy an album, i
tend to buy it.

i argue that peer to peer has actually helped the industry,
and instead of completely killing it, it should be somehow
regulated. large riaa-associated music labels should have
fucking embraced it; instead, internet and the independence
it allows is going to kill them. idiots.

it in my local record store for 16, you can bet your ass i
bought it without a doubt.

before p2p, it was very hit or miss with me, but it always
involved me purchasing the music, now with p2p i can listen
before i buy and make my own decision, i find this system
much better, very rarely will i go out and buy something ive
never heard.

Yes, I often Mp3 (rather than buy) pop tracks, that I know
will get on my nerves after two weeks, despite being very
catchy to begin with.

Anything with any sort of longevity, I tend to buy rather
than mp3.

Also, in all truthfullness; I buy more music as a result of
downloading it, than I don't buy, because I have an MP3 of
it instead.

have people forgot that you can check a cd/vinyl in a shop
before you hear it? i love going into a small shop where
they play it without headphones, and the staff are ususally
more informed and want to discuss it.

if there was a store local to me that did that with the
music i like, i'd totally be there all the time.

i'd suggest there's very few stores anywhere like this,
though :-(

Things I don't like about listening in store:

-Needles/tables/headphones are often wrecked/awful sound
quality (far worse than low quality mp3s in many cases).

-Sometimes you have to queue to use a listening post.

-Most stores have a limit on how many you can listen to.
This is bent: sometimes I take a stack of 20 records to the
table and I'll buy as many as 10/15 of them.

-Lack of ample space around listening posts.

-I tend to find the staff in a lot of record stores ill
informed, over opinionated and a bit try-hard. There are
some exceptions, and some stores that I like, but there are
plenty where you have some clueless teenager sneering at
your taste in music/ignoring you whilst they dick around
with the PA.

-Deafening P/A in store (especially in Indie stores) drowns
out anything you can hear on the record.

-Usually overpriced.

+On the plus side, with vinyl, you can see if it is
warped/skippy/etc. before you buy it.

+Occassional great second hand buys, where the store
obviously don't know the real value of a record (I've picked
up £50 records for £8, etc.)

Personally I prefer listening to Mp3s at home to trial a
release.
I certainly have no qualms about using it to listen to
things I've bought, but haven't arrived/I've not been able
to collect yet, Or as a way of making things I own on vinyl
"portable"/listenable in the car. Also good for in work or
when at the PC.

ok maybe i was being a bit one sided. i get totally where
you are coming from, tho wanting to listen to more than
about 2/3 cd's records isnt a problem really for me, as i
can't usually finance for that anyway. i agree tho, it can
be totally the other way, and larger stores are full of
clueless pricks, apart from there used to be this one guy in
hmv, who actually knew a fair bit about electronic music,
and recomended four tet to me, and four tet are awesome
