does (new) autechre get you excited anymore?

im not too excited for the new ae, however i'll always
welcome new music from the brazen electronic music gods.

over on teh wattem i had a saying that went like this:
"simetimes it's not about reinventing the wheel one more
time, it's about putting a shiny rim on the wheel and
watching it roll in style" ... so yeah, while i can
understand the prototypical newschool AE-defender argument
that goes "dude, [fuck you] it's art that you dont
understand" and even the one that goes "dude, musical
ARTISTS dont like doing the same thing over and over again,
its all about evolution, growth, and progression as an
artist" . i tend to retort that while those arguments
technically hold merit, that still doesnt rationalize them
completely losing focus on making music that still has a few
conventions necessary to make their stuff, say, music as
opposed to highly developed perpetuating noise....

like, take the push button objects remix...t groove is like
the onramp, and when you're vibing with it, to me, you get
more effect out of the variation and technically brilliant
beatfuckery that goes on as the track rolls on.

the draft lost me in that maybe only one track has any sort
of a groove about it.. the music is still technically
brilliant, however, it lacks soul... it doesnt have any
grooves, rhythm, or anything that renders the track
memorable to anyone other than some hardcore wannabe
avant-garde autechre fan who tells themselves over and over
and over and over that they love this shit.

basically, i'll be OK w/draft 7.30 if it was a necessary
technical-skill-building step towards making an absolutely
smashing EP/LP that brings back some of the cool-factor that
has been absent from most autechre music since, basically,
98-99 (with the exception of the very good 2nd peel sesh)...

yeah in a word, autechre's "music" isn't very cool anymore.
while it's amazingly astonishingly technical, its so fuckin
technical and arsty that it cant be arsed to have any of the
cool basic elements of electronic mus

hello jesus. I don't think they're music is that technical,
first of all. Second I think there's enough richness in
each album and such a ridiculously inexorable, determined
progression from album to album that it's at least
intellectually interesting to see where they will go next.

oh btw too lazy to read everything you wrote.

I'm not twitching backflips every 4 seconds due to
excitement for it, but it's definitely just about as excited
as I'll get about any release this year (except aphex.. and
of course, a few other artists could meet this level of
excitement from me..).

Autechres music isn't all that technical at all, and for the
first time ever I think I will listen to this release before
I purchase it.

a few things--
*you used 'prototypical' incorrectly
*one of AE's most curious features is that they DO NOT
reinvent the wheel--you can practically draw a straight line
graph plotting their progress
*I do think they get a little bit ahead of themselves these
days at times; not really understanding why they are doing
something and just doing it. I won't say technical because
I am not seeing a mastery of certain skills being involved.
*don't you get bored of music? how about them? You can't
expect draft to follow some tired formula. and are you
talking about surripere when mentioning a beat? do you turn
it off after 5 minutes?
*also, saying something "doesn't have soul" isn't a good
statement to put in a long post as this; rather explain what
you really mean (which you did afterwards with a formula,
but it made you sound a little lame).

poops.

autechre only gave me reasons to be excited about their new
albums... never I was dissapointed by one of their releases

they are the most solid act I know and probably the most
abstract music I like

aphex goes up and down... and when it is up its unreachable
but its down many times lately

autechre are always on top of the wave for my taste, so yes
I am very excited

draft was not a super step forwards in comparison with
confield but still it was a diferent release and for me a
great one

I loved the old autechre but I much prefer the new
autechre... I dont think they care only about the technical
part... they are very intuitive I think... their music is
very visceral I would say... I love it

It will be cool to hear more but i wouldnt say "excited"
would be the word i would use. I look forward to hearing new
music by them but i am not on the edge of my seat.

i'm excited about the new autechre "it". i can't wait to
buy it.

i think their sound changed in a subtle way between confield
and draft... i don't think those albums are very similar.

they get cooler with every release. so It will be the
coolest.

when i first heard the news about ae's new lp from the man
phobia, i was very exited, even more so when i first heard
the news about analord - all comparisons aside, ae's music
is magic to me, its all good, and i cannot see myself
disliking anything they make - hell even the hafler trio
stuff is good in the right mood, albeit relaxed. ae may
lack soul or whatever, or so people say, but to me its just
music, its not some technical audio research or whatever or
some feat that in reaching that feat, it implies their music
is brilliant - i just really like their stuff, so its again
boils down to an argument about taste.

the new Autechre LP is the only music news that's gotten me
truly excited since April of 2003.

people who only dig autechre because it sounds "artsty,
technical" are fucking saps

if you dig the music, then you dig it. you like it because
you feel it. what the fuck does your respect level for their
skills have to do with anything.

if everyone used the same shit to make music, all of you
people who are like this would finally shut up and get lives

i like confield and draft because i feel them. not because
of the particular themes ofthe tracks, the way the tracks
were made, or anything, i can fucking feel those fat tracks
under my skin.

you pricks who can only come out to say that it sounds "too
random", like, youve figured out how they made the track,
need to shut up

did anyone ever dance to autechre in the first place?

sini, calling it noise just means you dont like it. just
like when everyones granddads called the beatles noise.
there are qualities to music that people other than you
enjoy, that doesnt mean theyre posers.

fucking a, you know what the most pretentious form of
electronic music is? dance music. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
DANCE TO ORGANIC MUSIC FOREVER. so because the drum machine
got all popular some time after electronic music was
created, everyone must keep some sort of danceable rhythmic
soul? funny, i thought souls came from people, not
perfectly quantized drum sounds.

sini, you should perhaps find something fufilling in your
life, all this hero worshipping cant be good for you.

i remember going apeshit here on xlt the first time i heard
draft in full. it was 4am or something after a night at the
pub that i came home with a mates burn of the tape rip. i
dont know what to expect this time around. draft was a lot
stranger than confield to my ear. im hoping for something
very far fetched :)

before i heard draft i considered ae to be one of the warp
bands that i feeled compelled to listen to because everyone
else here does, rather than liking them because of their
music. (up to that point i had bought tri repetae, confield
anvil vapre and atp3) but after hearing draft i cant wait
for the next ae release. autechre keeps getting better and
better.
