On a lot of DVD players you can enter a code on the remote
to release the region-lock thingy, apparently

Ahh crrap this

I'll have to take it back. I just want to know why THEY
CAN'T MAKE ALL DVDS THE SAME!!! It annoys me because
tomorrrrow is my only day off and I don't want to go to

I think most dvd players in the uk can play PAL, not NTSC,
although some can play both. I'm not exactly an expert
though.

only certain DVD players can play pal format. There are DVD
players that will play all formats. and a few DVD players
can be "hacked" to play different formats, i don't know if
that includes PAL. There are websites where you can find
"codes" like sequences you push on your remote to open menus
to change the format your player can play....

do a google search. you might get lucky!

You're in the UK, every DVD player you're likely to buy here
is PAL. If you can't play a PAL DVD then the chances are the
DVD is faulty.

PAL/NTSC is not teh same as region encoding. Anus' DVD is
PAL Region 2, his DVD is 99.9% certain to be PAL Region 2 as
well.

PAL is the standard for Europe, NTSC for America.

it has something to do with how many colourlines there are
per second on screen and thus the quality of image - in
short, PAL is better image quality than NTSC. if you have
the choice, always go for a PAL dvd.

in this case it does sound like your dvd is fucked. try it
on another dvd-player.

it goes back to the invention of .. power i think. in some
parts in the world theres 60Hz AC coming out of your wall,
and in other parts its 50Hz.

i think thats it.

theres also something about the resolution of the image, PAL
is better. im not sure about this.

Almost all DVD players sold in PAL countries play both
kinds of discs. These multi-standard players partially
convert NTSC to a 60-Hz PAL (4.43 NTSC) signal. The player
uses the PAL 4.43-MHz color subcarrier encoding format but
keeps the 525/60 NTSC scanning rate. Most modern PAL TVs can
handle this "pseudo-PAL" signal. A few multi-standard PAL
players output true 3.58 NTSC from NTSC discs, which
requires an NTSC TV or a multi-standard TV. Some players
have a switch to choose 60-Hz PAL or true NTSC output when
playing NTSC discs. There are a few standards-converting PAL
players that convert from an NTSC disc to standard PAL
output for older PAL TVs. Proper "on the fly" standards
conversion requires expensive hardware to handle scaling,
temporal conversion, and object motion analysis. Because the
quality of conversion in DVD players is poor, using 60-Hz
PAL output with a compatible TV provides a better picture
than converting from NTSC to PAL. (Sound is not affected by
video conversion.)

ah, the little autistic child inside me remembered
correctly

what a load of wankers we are for creating different
standards

Anus, not sure if this will work with your dvd but I have a
bjork dvd and one side of the disk is region 2 (pal) which
works on UK dvd players and the other side is Region 1
(ntsc). If the dvd looks the same both sides try putting it
in the other way around.

using it on the NTSC side all this time.
