"The day I flew in, we stayed up in the air watching the whole place get hit. I couldn't believe that was the place I was going. After the mortar attack, I got to my unit and asked to see the captain. They told me he was away from the main area of the camp.
'Well, can I get him?' 'Sure, he's right out there under those trees somewhere.' I walked out to meet him and take over command. He was dead with his head blown off and his dick in the air. He had been out there masturbating when the mortars hit and got his head blown right off. Stiff as a board with his cock in his hands."
From the amazing book, Nam

I ended up taking time and talking with a local veteran by a local bar. His stories were quite interesting to say the least. Alot of them mildly bummed me out. Just the fact when i asked him "did you at any point, think you were making any progress?" and his answer was along the lines of "shit no."
He had done a 13 month tour and was effected by Agent Orange on numerous occasions. His health is lacking today because of effects of it.

wow, your reading 'His Dark Materials'! Everyone should read them, did you know in America they were burning the books because of the way religion is portrayed?

I heard that the mention of God and Religion is being expunged from the films for fear of offending the far-right Christians.

They? Please be more specific than 'Americans,' as most of us had nothing to do with this, and I have never even heard of it.

well, if books are being burned because of the way religion is portrayed in them, it doesn't take that much thought to come to the conclusion that we're talking right-wing christians here.

so you think people on this mb, reading "did you know in America they were burning the books because of the way religion is portrayed?", would seriously think that a large group of randomly assorted Americans has started burning these books, apparently without any religious reasons behind their bookburning actions (eventhough it has been actually stated that the way religion is portrayed is the main cause)..?

Good on you Paul for reading His Dark Materials! The only problem with taking out the anti-religious elements from the books for the movies if that there won't be much left! I hope the movies aren't going to be a total botch job now.
Has anyone here had the opportunity to see the stage adaptation at the National?

I'm surprised you don't know him!
together with Ken Loach he's responsible for an onslaught of socially bleak films.
Mike Leigh at IMdb
classics are "abigail's party" (which was originally a stageplay, filmed by the BBC in the '70s), "naked", "secrets and lies" and, my personal favourite, "topsy-turvy".

whatever the hell "socially bleak films" are supposed to be..
I'm so sorry.
his films are normally very bleak in nature and have a great social awareness around them.
he never writes scripts, but creates films based on a very basic outline and letting his actors improvise, then finally filming it.
even "topsy-turvy", which is a costume-drama (although it's VERY funny) about Gilbert and Sullivan, is based on historical research and THEN improvisation.

His films don't seem to get much publicity over here, a British film gets hyped up only when Hugh Grant stars in it, like Notting Hill. Any serious films don't get a mentioned. I've never really looked at british film making beyond that because i didn't think there was anything! I never thought we have any directors as capable as our European neighbours, like Almadovar for example.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up, i'll check out his films,

If you like Abigail's Party, check out Nuts In May... I've been looking for this on VHS/DVD for ages! It's a great film! (also by Mike Leigh).
Talking of socially bleak films, there is one by Ken Loach, let me check IMDB.com for it... hmm, might not be by Ken Loach.. anyway, it's a UK film about a single mother struggling to cope in a rundown council estate in London.. In the end, she kills her children and herself - it's a heartbreaking film, and I have wanted to watch it again since I first saw it -- only I can't remember the Title :(
