Ok, this game was working fine up until the Santraps level.
Now, both in Half Life2 and Counterstrike, I get the 'Memory could not be "read"' error message, complete with wonderful sound looping, at random points. I then have to quit Half Life2, or if that doesn't work, I have to restart the PC.
Perhaps it's the update that has caused it, as it used to work fine and only recently has it gone to shit.
Please may a do something to express my anger?
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.
Thanks. Please help. Someone.

Copy the save game files / uninstall half-life 2 / reinstall half-life 2 / never play half-life 2 online again (to avoid the patch)
That's the only thought I had really.

or you could've tried using Steam's support and found this answer, which perhaps can help.

mem_force_flush [0,1] - If set to 1 forces the cache to be flushed on every allocation, which is not necessarily optimal but can reduce memory-related errors.
That may help you.

Tonnes of people are having the same problem. There is still no real fix, despite a massive thread over at the steam forums. Check Here

I have tried many measures (like the ones above) but to no avail.
Damn PC games...they're good WHEN THEY WORK! What a waste of money for all that upgrading!

try asking Steam directly for help - if anything, you can at least tell them you're pissed off.

Only Half Life 2 could get away with this sort of debacle. Any other game would be dead in the water... Surely valve knew it'd be big, it's not like it was an "unexpected success" or anything.

given as long as it took for this game to be released, it seems like it was still rushed a bit at the end.
there are a few hugely widespread bugs that seem like they shouldn'tve slipped out.
