what's yours?
mine is probably the Spirit Temple in Zelda Ocarina of Time, i re-did this game a lot of times (it's my favourite game) and this is my favourite place... i even wished i lived in a place like that (minus the puzzles and spikes and plus stuff to make it a real living place of course)...
i also love Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3 (which has some of the best game BGMs ever in my opinion)... the hospital in Silent Hill 2 & 3 with all the letters from mad people... and the near-to-final scene in Metal Gear Solid 2, with the "special" codec transmissions but that's not so much for the level itself than for these transmissions...
some of the places in the Myst series are nice as well

Cool topic, it's making my head pulsate. Basically every ''area'' of Silent Hill 2 and 1. The apartments, the jail, the school, the hotel... I'm still haunted by those locales to this day. And the mansion portion of the first Resident Evil was really stunning when I first played it. And it still is.
Also loved clock level in Super Mario 64, 3-D platforming bliss. And the Goldeneye Facility is definitely unforgettable. There's talk of a 16 player Goldeneye for the Nintendo DS, that would spank.
Old school- the first levels for Sonic 1 and 2. Green Hill, Emerald Hill, can't recall offhand what they're called, but the colors were vivid, the speed was insane, and the music was unbelievably wicked. Made a great first impression back in '91.
''Giant Land'' from Mario 3 was nice. Huge massive blocky sprites.
The Gothic castle where you start off in Devil May Cry had some amazing architecture (that's what the second one lacked, it was so vanilla). Pretty breathtaking stuff when you're by that exploding bridge, and at the start where you're just casually approaching.

I'd pay good money for an entire Mario game full of nothing but that style of gameplay. ''On tracks'', so to speak. Great stuff, nice and challenging.
It makes me miss the Crash Bandicoot series... in the era of 3D go anywhere/do anything gameplay, it sort of got left in the dust... but there was some damn fine straightforward platforming in those games.

''the mine cart levels in donkey kong country''
I'd put them in my LEAST favorite video game zones. But I love to hate them... there were a couple of tricky jumps that I used to totally hate, but in hindsight, it was awesome somehow.
Addition- almost every level from Thief 3. The museum, the sailor's mansion, the various castles and homes... oozing atmosphere. I swear I could smell the world when I played that game.

A LOT of the Sonic stages: Oil Ocean, Scrap Brain, Ice Cap etc., mostly because of their colours, background and soundtrack.
The London Underground Lever with Jack the Ripper in Shadowman 64
There are so many actually, but I can't come up with more at the moment.
