...my replacement PowerBook arrived on Tuesday, and after
testing it I have concluded that it has two out of
three problems that my original PowerBook had, these being:

1) weak display/lid
basically, when you put slight pressure on the lid of the
machine (either when the lid is open or closed) there is a
loud creaking/clicking sound, you can literally feel the
aluminium giving way, and you can feel the click with your
fingers. when the lid is open and slight pressure is applied
to the aluminum, the LCD is affected (you know, that watery
effect that happens when you press on an LCD). this is
the most serious problem as i am afraid that one day it will
totally give way when i pick it up and crack the
display

2) 4x DVD-R SuperDrive does NOT burn at 4x
I have tried three brands, just like I did with my other
PowerBook, and I am unable to burn discs at 4x. Yes the
discs ARE designated for use at 4x. No i CANNOT burn at 4x
like Apple say i can in the advertisment speil.

my patience is wearing very thin

4x drives NEVER burn at 4x. The 4x refers to burst
speed...normally you only get half the advertised speed in
normal use.

The LCD thing is a design issue. A lot of laptops suffer
from similar problems...the Sony Viao laptop screens
actually suffer from minor flexing as the lid is opened
closed, resulting in a similar effect as you discribe. This
is often down to the hinges being a little too tight, but
they often loosen with use, which is why on new laptops they
are a little overly tight.

no again, because my friend's first generation 17" PowerBook
never suffered from this, and his is well over a year old
and has had lots of use and bumps. Mine is brand spanking
new straight from the box.

sorry to be snappy, i know that you're trying to offer
advice and i appreciate it - but i also have a gaping hole
in my tooth and i've had the worst toothache i've had in my
entire life, so i'm a bit snappy

Problem 1... Are you not just being heavy handed?

Problem 2.... Do you mean that it never actually reaches 4X
or are you expecting it to continually burn at 4X?

If the latter then no wonder you think it's broken. 4X just
refers to the max speed it could possibly burn at in optimum
conditions. Anyway, it'd be a burst at that speed to be
honest.

1)no i am totally not being heavy handed....this thing is
costing me £80 a month for 4 years, there's no way i'm
being heavy handed - i've had other people testify that i am
not being heavy handed

2) it offers me a choice of burning speeds.....1x is
available, 2x is available, all other speeds are greyed out
and unselectable. it is nothing to do with burst speed. i am
unable to reach 4x at all because i cannot choose it as a
burning option

i dunno why you're having those display problems

just don't pick it up by the screen

you don't understand - you HAVE to pick it up by placing
pressure on the lid

its a laptop

and it's supposed to be one of the most sturdy ones too

1) Fair enough. We just got a tablet PC at work mind and
that has a bendy back to it. Doesn't click like yours though
and I don't know if it affects the screen or not. That's a
Toshiba Portégé by the way.

2) Then that's just faggotry on a stick and a perfectly
valid reason to lodge it as a complaint. I'm with you on
that one mate.

1) i want one of those Tablet PC's, they seem nifty :)
should at least be able to play Half-Life on them, but how
you'd do it with the touch screen i dunno!

2) yes it is totaly faggotry....the supervisor i spoke to
said that i should be able to burn at 4x

They're not really a touch screen as such. It's strange. The
pen works even without you touching the screen. Although
touching the screen with it is easier obviously.

my 4x always burns at 4x and has done for nearly 4 years.
nop probs here. it's usually a software/hardware conflict if
you're having write problems. by conflict i mean you just
have to try and find the right piece of software that likes
your writer. writeable disks used to come into the equation
aswell but not so much nowadays.

start asking for the name of the customer support person to
which you are speaking... and, ask for the name of their
supervisor.

then, the next time you call say something like "well, i
spoke to brad last time and he assured me..."

things may happen faster if you start dropping
names.

that's not an issue with Apple machines

they're built to be 100% compatible with the operating
system.

i'm trying to burn with the Finder, Disk Utility (which are
both Apple proprietry programs) and Toast 6.0.5 and i still
cannot burn at 4x.

well the second time that my original machine went in for
repair, a supervisor had supposedly emailed the service

it was made worse

yeah, i got used to working with apple machines in college,
so when the G4s first came out i got on the waiting list...
but, there were some totally gay problems that were their
fault not mine and i got bumped off the waiting list.

they said they'd put me back on, but that i'd have to go to
the back of the line.

WTF?

so, i built my own pc for $1000 less, and i haven't really
used a mac since.

that should teach you, being a mac fan

pc's are cheap, and you can steal anything you need from teh
intarweb. oh and they crash a lot but who cares if you can
just reinstall your shit without much hassle

i'm not a mac fan anymore, didn't you read my Mac = Shit
thread?

you can steal a lot of software for Mac too - especially
since disk imaging software is included in the OS

offline epohs from )C: on 2004-09-02 12:57 [#01321762]

i'm not too into stealing software anywhoo...

i'll probably end up getting a powerbook after they've gone
G5... but, i'm in no rush.

right now i'm pretty busy messing around with different
flavors of linux.

and, neither of my past two windows machines were crash
happy. win2k and XP have both been impressively stable. of
course, i don't run p2p software, or install warez... and i
take relatively good care of my machines.

but, for the most part, i think the myth of modern PCs being
unstable is vastly overexagerated.
