This is a great movie. It's by the Coen brothers who
apparently have some sort of cult following but I havn't
seen any of their other movies yet.

One of the characters has a genuine criminal mentality. He
stuffed someone into a wood chipper. It's just about as evil
as the movie "seven", only they're just normal killers
instead of "serial" killers.

I'm pretty sure there's like an official definition among
criminologist or something which involves the criminal
laying low for long periods in between killings.

difference between killings in fargo and 7. ahh.

ha ha, I like her and the whole bizarreness of the

that stood there with the shovel and talked about moose lake
etc to the cop.

Yes I would kill her in the most violent way after feeding
her her baby. I would also watch "The Big Lebowski" and "The
man who wasn't there" another 1000 times if my neighbourhood
video club owners weren't complete dipshits.

You can buy such movies on ebay for a mere 1.99 or so (vhs).
It's maybe cheaper than renting plus you get to keep it.
Most of them are in pretty good condition.

No it's a little more expensive than buying them... plus I
don't have an account nor a vhs playback device. I usually
get the movies I wanna see but some bastard customers
wrecked both these dvds and the dipshit supervisor didn't
replace them.

Millers Crossing is brilliant, Raising Arizona is good,
Blood Simple is cool, Big Labowski is awesome, The Man Who
Wasn't There is good, Fargo is cool, O' Brother Where Art
Thou is brilliant, Intolleratble Cruelty is OK, haven't saw
The Lady Killers yet.

Fargo is a great movie, probably the most accessable from
the Coens. Barton Fink is great and completely original,
I've never seen another film remotely like it. Big Lebowski
is true genius (mixing the 2 best things in the world, film
noir and marijuana) and I love all their other films, even
Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers which are both
clever, colourful and memorable movies despite lacking in
the originality and weirdness of many of their earlier
films.

O Brother Where Art Thou brilliant? I wouldn't say that. I
think it's okay, but doesn't.. um.. cling.

Fargo I would call brilliant. very simple storyline (simple
as in: not contrived, which is one of the pitfalls the Coens
seem to fall into regularly), great characters, incredible
camerawork, great soundtrack.

(and you didn't mention the Hudsucker Proxy..)

Barton Fink and Hudsucker Proxy are both quality too, I was
listing them off the top of my head and me and films don't
really mix.

The first time I saw o'brother I wasn't too impressed but as
time has one on I love it more and more, I love the dialog
and the way the shots are framed, the music is cool and the
way they altered the colour of the film just added to the
atmosphere.

What are the names of some similar directors. To avoid a
massive list that merely reflects a wide range of
subjectivity, I'll be more specific... how about directors
that fall into (or make movies that fall into) any or all of
these categories:

eccentric
profound
insane
deep...

And probably ones of a approximate semi-obscurity as fargo
would be best since I might not have heard of those. These
are your instructions, now MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!

Just because you don't know something doesn't make it semi
obscure.

you could try Terry Gilliam's work. not all of it falls into
those categories, but quite a lot does.

Blood Simple, so so

Raising Arisona, one of their best.

Miller's Crossing, very nice

Barton Fink, pretty interesting. good.

The Hudsucker Proxy, is good.

Fargo, their most boring movie ever. i'll never watch it
again. (i thought it was a travesty that this is the one
that got an award)

The Big Lebowski, their best by far a thousand times over.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?, fantastic movie.

The Man Who Wasn't There, along with the quality that wasn't
there, the interest that wasn't there and the dialog that
wasn't there.

Intolorable Cruelty, a decen't movie, w/ a few to many
turnarounds, but all in all likable.

The Ladykillers, Tom Hanks is good, why do a remake? its
funny at best. its ok.

........Lebowski is definatly their masterwork

groovy, more suggestions.

I never used to watch movies, but now I have a vcr, access
to ebay and tons of spare time. They seem quite a linear
medium sometimes, but an advantage is you get to be really
lazy. You don't even have to hold a controller or make
decisions or something...

I really like this movie, I love the sense of
''environment''... or something. The movie really makes me
feel like I'm there, or makes me imagine what it would be
like to be there. And I find Frances McDormand cute for some
reason.

Richard Linklater has almost always impressed me. School of
Rock was the most un-him movie he ever did, but then again
he didn't write it.

i just took a trip into the big city to watch Before Sunset,
which is the sequal to his genius love story Before Sunrise,
from the mid 90's. Before Sunset was brillant, but then
again i'm going to love anything he does w/ those two
characters. they were even in Waking Life which is another
brillant movie. Linklater to lookout for is:

Slacker
Dazed & Confused
Before Sunrise
Waking Life
School of Rock
Before Sunset

try to avoid The Bakers Boys (think that was the name)

funny how Linklater basically invented Mathew McConehey and
Ben Affleck. Richard is also who Kevin Smith basically
patterns after. he's notorious for having no plots, where
characters just run around and do stuff.
