Look at Usenet.

Message boards are in good shape compared to that.

yes it is sad. i only really lurk about on here to listen to
unsinged music and find out about artists i don't know of,
but this seems to be a something of a rarety for a music
board?

maybe it's not the decline of message boarrds as a
rresourrce but at least the message boarrd as a community of
'frriends'. i think people arre just starrting to
underrstand how unrrewarrding it is. maybe i'm way off the
marrk.

One thing worse than messageboards are blogs. I am saving
lots of them up and then when the owners are no longer
whiney teenage brats voicing there fucking useless emo
opinions about bollocks, but have grown up to be account
managers for G-MEXX Chemicals and Munitions I am going to
blackmail their arses into the void with their fucking own
adolescent tripe. Blogmail I call it, and I'm banking on it
as my pension.

My blog is purely for my personal use. If I find a link I
blog it so I can check it later.

I'll always love messageboards, I prefer them to chatrooms
and blogs and Live/Deadjournals and ACTUAL HUMAN CONTACT.

But after a while, certain boards really develop a country
club atmosphere, which is fun, but has its downfalls. We are
like so bad.

where do you think online communication is moving
if its moving away from message boards?

in the past several years, it seems like there has
been a huge movement away from email lists towards
message boards. i guess because people more likely
have web access all day then email access, or don't want to
clog up their email boxes. and a few years before that
there
was a movement away from usenet towards email lists (sort
of).

i've also noticed some folks have moved to communicating via
blogs/livejournals, although i've never really gotten into
it myself. it doesn't seem very communal to be just
commenting on one person's diary or one person's one way
content.

i DO actually kind of like the combination of social
networking and message boards, like tribe.net has, although
it doesn't really have a good critical mass of people yet.
