from joyrex, on tavcom:

"Sorry once again for the delays... we had a death in the
family (a cousin my wife was really close to), so I've been
tied up giving support to my wife and her parents and have
not had any time to check on the status of the server, etc.
Tonight is the first real chance I've had to get some time
to myself, and the funeral is Saturday. I'll check on the
server status and post an update as soon as I know what's
going on. DNS changes have not been put in yet, so even if
the server is ready, it will take a few days for the domain
to transfer, etc.

Unfortunately, all the extra money I made freelancing the
week prior was taken up by donations to the family, so the
CMS is in limbo (won't affect the forum though) until I can
fanagle some cash out of my wife and I's meager budget
excess and convince her that we can live on Ramen® noodles
for a week for WATMM

Again, thanks for your patience, and don't think for a
second this is the end - rather, it's a new beginning, and
the beginning I feel WATMM should have had from the start.

I am seriously considering selling the majority of my vinyl
on Ebay (or perhaps just post it on the WATMM forum for the
first takers) in order to get the compilation out - I want
this record to come out, and at this point, I'm willing to
give up things I treasure to ensure I keep my promise to all
of you. "

The Warp board looked gorgeous, but I was never a regular
there and it's a hazy memory. From what I remember, it was
decadent and spiraled out of control. IDM fans, man. IDM

on the warp forum . maybe some friends have
screenshots...i'll try to find them. it was the best looking
board, but this one is one of the best in the present, not
just for the electronic music.
i wish that serious and concrete, cretaive threads will
outnumber stupid, comic and such others.

No, not exactly (although that would be a nice feature to
add) - some people liked the threaded view of the WARPforum,
and the new version of the forum software (due in mid-June)
offers both flat view (like this one), a threaded view (like
the WARPForum was) and a combination view.

I'll just be happy to get the site back up and running, and
focus on the discogs and news and articles, at long last.

When are you going to start a news section Phob (or at least
update the front pages' news)? The XLT discog is great
(although a bit of a pain to navigate), but you need more
content from aphextwin.nu here to satisfy your fans...

I see... well, the discog is still a work-in-progress, but a
more visual way of searching or perhaps a boolean search
would be more user-friendly, especially with the huge number
of entries already in the discog.

Imagine being able to see all the albums from a particular
year, and sort by label, artist or format - that would be
awesome and truely useful.

Joyrex/Phobia: what is it about expressionengine that makes
it so good? I work on CMS stuff for a living, been toying
with the idea of open sourcing it. Most the stuff out there
currently really, really sucks :-(

i haven't tried it.... only been reading the theoritical
parts - no need since tunemx coded our own CMS for this
site... but it has some features not yet available for other
products, like php-support etc etc - YET.

i've been running newspro/coranto for many years now and I
know many coders that usually help me out if I need
something (perl-)specific - so therefore coranto is fine for
me for other sites.... and it's free. expressionengine is
like $149?

Gosh, where to start about EE - here's a short list of why I
personally chose it to drive WATMM:

1) fully customizable templates - you can use PHP in the
templates, embed templates into templates, and the EE tag
language is much easier to pick up than Drupal or others.
The templates are also very easy to create/customize.

2) Fully dynamic pages - by using page caching on the
server, pages can be dynamic and still fast (Movable Type
and other software are static and have to rebuild each time
you add content)

3) Extensible addon API - Allows easy development of addons
for EE, extending it's abilities.

4) User level control - my content managers will be able to
submit content anytime they like, and I can control the
document flow, making edits and such as I see fit,
publishing them when 'cleared' for submission.

5) Price - most of EE's main features are only found in CMS
software costing $$$. Sure, there are other CMSs out there
that have lots of great features (Typo3 comes to mind, which
I looked at but couldn't invest the time in learning it)
that are free, but usually at the cost of ease-of-use and
development time. Also, being a paid product, there is a
higher level of support than with free apps.

6) Coranto/LNX is basically dead - I use Coranto for my
client websites (as it's really easy to set up and for users
to administer their sites), but support for it is dwindling,
with no major revisions/enhancements coming anytime soon.

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2004-06-02 14:48 [#01219958]
Points: 1389 Status: Lurker

6) Document versioning - allows me to keep several copies of
a document, and revert when information is incorrect, etc.

7) It doesn't look like any other CMS - that's the #1
complaint many have with CMS software (*Nuke variants suffer
from this), is all the sites made with them look similar or
the same. They all have this "oh, it was made with Nuke"
look to them :\

8) Full XHTML/CSS compliance - a must nowadays if you want
to code and design with standards and useability in mind.

I agree, 95% of the CMS software is crap, but EE is really
that good - go check them out at
http://www.expressionengine.com or http://www.pmachine.com.
And don't be fooled by the "Weblog" stuff - while you can
use EE as a weblog, it is really a CMS and I am sure as it
develops it will be marketed more as a CMS than a weblog.
