Dancer In the Dark- IT HURTS!!!

Okay, I havent cried about a movie since 'The Rats of Nimh'
and this did it! Okay, its a great fucking movie, and my
wedding date with Bjork IS approaching, but that damned
movie made me want to go and die!!!DIE!!

I LOVED IT!!

that is by far the sadest ending I have EVER seen!!

@ questions spring from my rambling, fellow IDM monks.

1- Have you seen it, and did it destroy your will to
live!?!?!

2- Any other movies that have hit you the same way?
The only other movies with Dancers capabilities are 'End of
Evangelion' and maybe Sailor moon r. (so shoot me)

I like kung Fu films too, and Samurai films.

But everyone needs to see DITD.

amazing film! Von Trier's other movie Dogville is depressing
too, but still very good.

Requim for a Dream is another extremely depressing film but
the film where i cried the most is my favourite film of all
time, Takeshi Kitano's 'Hana Bi', everyone should watch that
film!

me too, especially the end,

Yeah it's hardcore emotinal film DITD like, phenomenal
movie, love it. Bjork is just amazing in it. I was told that
she actually disappeared for 6 months half way through the
making of it.. I hope to god she plays at the glade festival
or I'll cry.

do an all round Lars binge :)

What's amazing about Dancer in the Dark is that the script
is so over the top. I mean how much bad luck can one person
have? She's blind, she's poor, her kid needs an expensive
operation, her neighbour steals her money, and then he makes
her kill him, she gets sentenced to death. And yet when you
watch the movie... it doesn't seem to matter at all. Great
film, I loved it. The endig was really sad yes... and
shocking too. The way she is singing that happy song with a
broken voice. And then when the hatch opens everything
suddenly falls silent... very painful moment.

I agree. The story keeps pouring the tears of little kittens
into the viewer's sadness bucket - pouring and pouring what
should be a ridiculous amount of the stuff, so that normally
you'd expect it to overflow into the adjacent "funny" and
"annoying" buckets, but somehow it doesn't. It works. Very
much worth watching.

I haven't gotten around to seeing Dogville yet.

Yes! I must have seen Hana-bi about 20 times now - And every
time it has the same effect.

There aren't words to describe the emotions.

How is it underrated?? It won the Palm d' Ores at Cannes
and one of the songs from the soundtrack was nominated for
an Oscar.

I didn't cry at Ghost, it was a bit of popcorn that got into
my eye.

embarrasing , i was with my mates and all...

Yeah Dancer in the dark is a good movie for sure.
I wish he would stop shooting his movies in sweden tho when
the stories is suposed to take place in the US. Kinda ruins
it for me to see familiar enviroments /nature.

no ones yet mentioned the mockney accent which occasionally
creeps in which is deliciously funny coming from bjork :)
this is a heavy film, the ending winded me.

dancer in the dark is a beautiful movie. beautiful in a very
painful way. the script is amazing, the actors play very
well their parts (bjork was a wonderful surprise in this
respect, though having in mind what a talented musician she
is i had to be prepared), and another thing that really
appealed to me was the way different scenes were shot. real
life vs. imgainary musical. shaking, uncertain, blurred
camera and dull colors for the first, fixed picture and very
sharp and contrast colors for the latter. definitely a
masterpiece.

i watched part of it.... i left before the end.

didn't want to see this ending, already before the end it
was depressing... i never liked sad endings, sometimes it
makes me really angry at the author for being so cruel with
the characters...

(last time i said this, that i didn't like sadness and
avoided sad stories, people started shouting at me, almost
insulting me, for the sake of art and all and i left the
board for a few days - i surely can understand this reaction
too...)

(thanks for the warning about End Of Evangelion)

btw, i'd recommend you guys a movie called "irreversible".
it's french - i kinda developed an affinity to european
cinema. the scenes are presented in reverse order so it
takes some time to get into it. there are very contradictory
oppinions on it but most good movies get such. it's really
sad especially it's "happy ending" (which is in fact the
story's beginning).

just because it wasn't underrated at cannes doesn't mean it
wasn't underrated elsewhere. but maybe underrated isn't the
right word. underappreciated, perhaps, and not very well
known in the mainstream.
