you're all probably right about it, but I think the action should do it some mild justice. Another thing I don't get is all the shit-talking about CGI... what do people expect developers to do... USE ANAMATRONICS? CGI is definately the most versatile, advanced, BEST way to do special effects movies have ever seen, a film like this one probably wouldn't even be possible due to the budget constraints of a non-CGI set. Dunno, may be missing the point but I don't really see how a movie can be 'over-CGIed'...

because CGI can be used very badly. mostly it is best to only use CGI only when absolutely needed.
these films cram it full, replacing storyline with special effects, making the film an empty husk.
one could argue that this is "over-CGI-ed".
also, CGI can look crap. as I said, if it's tastefully used, it's hardly noticable. if it's all over the place, the whole thing looks like a cartoon. change the building, change the skies, change the ground, change the car, change the actors, etc.

CGI is used far too much. Where's the inventiveness of cinema gone?
The best effects I've ever seen in a film were completely CGI free. They've got locked into a groove of CGI it. Can't be bothered to work out how to film it.
Finding Nemo makes sense to be in CGI. It's used properly but when it's used just because they can then it's stupid. I'm more impressed when they don't use CGI. Horror films using it is pissing me off. They don't make any of the action better!

"Horror films using it is pissing me off."
I agree. I think it's because even if you don't realise something is CGI straight away, it makes it feel slightly unreal and therefore less scary.

I feel cheated when it's CGI. That's not clever use of makeup and camera techniques.
Alien - Alien was fucking shit scary looking and I loved it.
Alien : Resurrection - Aliens looked shit as CGI and weren't scary.
If they re-did Alien with CGI I can guarentee it'd be shit.

Have you seen Wrong Turn? Even though they use CGI for about 5 seconds in one scene (and it's hardly noticeable), most of the film is live action and the make up/fx is awesome. Done by the guy who did Jurassic Park.

I agree, CGI just isn't my dish. Something about the way it moves just doesn't convince me. Especially when fancy camera angles are swinging and flying around, embellishing it.
You know what I DO find horrifying... stop motion animation. There something unsettling about it, unnatural... not like CGI, though... there's something eerie. Especially when it's somewhat choppy.
On topic... I'm kind of looking forward to Van Helsing! The game, too. Obviously it's going to be borderline retarded, and that's what I'm counting on. The kind of thing I won't mind tuning into on TBS when I'm really bored. I do like the image of that pale gargoyle-chick-thing flying towards the screen, and Hugh Jackman has exquisite cheekbones.
A Castlevania movie... that's risky business. It would be nigh impossible to do right, but if they DID... oh shit. Spurt. Especially if they loaded it full of inside jokes and trivial things only geeks like me would notice.
