...when you've got a good bunch of loops for a track, you're about halfway finished, and they you realize you don't know where the hell to take it?

That is the main reason I finish one track per year. Also what sucks is having a song in progress on loop so much you get sick of it and never want to work on it again.

You wouldn't believe how often that happens to me. Particularly with hip hop instrumentals and drum and bass. I have never ever managed to satisfactorily finish a track in either genre :-/

good point! i guess the fact that you get stuck on a track is proof that you're concerned about making something good.
i've been writing a lot less lately than i used to, but the results have been better.

i hate when you get stuck.. and music-making becomes less of a fluid inspiration and more of a grinding, technical software-fuckary session..
like when you can't think of anything more to do that is original or interesting with your existing sounds/melodies, so the modern electronic-music-maker usually just ends up using the tried-and-true method of purposely fucking up everything with strange sound-manipulation decisions galore, until they are left with a result usually similar to something else they just haven't heard yet..
we'd like to think that we can instantly make something unique, yet still compelling, and all the while have that process be effortless, but you really need to get your hands dirty, and put hours of thought and consideration into it if you really want something unlike anyone else's... but then the music ceases to be your own.. and you'd might as well have a ouja board write your music for you somehow..
actually, i bet that's been done before.

ive had the opposite ive been writting lots n half r crap n half r the best ive ever done. its prolly because ive found a new way to write tunes. before i started doing electronica i was a guitarist and wrote all my songs on guitar and recently i figured why not just transfer songs i write on the guitar to my synths etc. it seems to work as im much better at writting tunes on my guitar

q4z2x i always worried about being original n tried cutting voices n wierd ways or using odd samples in ways they havent been used and then i though, fuck this, i am not aphex twin im not gonna sit at my computer and write something thats going to inspire a whole new genre. so now instead i just concentrate on writting a pretty tune that make people go ahhh thats pretty or shit thats funky. i figure originality will come of its own accord at some point or other if i just stop trying to force it!
Sorry for the 2 in a row only saw the reply after i hit post

the way most people deal with a lack of ideas is by making noise or ambient music.

well i tend to agree with you about that.. at least when it comes to most 12 semitone scale melodies, but rhythmically, and texturally the possibilities are seemingly endless. if you are to incorporate micro-tones and tones above or below the normal pleasant-sounding or audible range of human hearing that also increases the possibilities to an ostensibly limitless range. and if you bring time into it, that also brings the possibilities of music to a unbearably incomprehensible infinity. -- you could make a piece of "music" comprised of just one droning frequency, that could be divided or expanded to form an endless string of variant pieces, each increasing the length of that droning tone by just a fraction of a second. the creation could go on forever and each piece would be unique because of the difference in length. i know that's not a really good example, since most don't consider single droning notes of various lengths to be music, but it does fit into the definition of music in one way or another. if someone were to say "hey it's not actually music if there is just one droning frequency, music is in tonal relations" you could just make each of those droning pieces have a slightly different counterpart frequency or "harmony".. and that's it.. one would need to consider each a valid and unique piece of music no matter how boring and uninspired each would be.. (at least if one was to also consider all of the cookie-cutter template-shit of today to be music.)

when I get stuck, I loop the sequence once more, add some crazy drill'n'bass sounds that doesn't belong in the song and a synth.
then I do some tricks with the panning and pitch, plus I may revers something, cut it and set it back together properly.
then I fade.

YEP. It's the bane of my existence pretty heavily. I'm getting better at getting past it though (especially hard for the way I write coz I put lots of sectoins in songs rather than just little idm style variations and tweaks and it drives me nuts).

yeah, that's the best way of dealing with stuck moments,i do that everytime,so it spares me of deleting a bunch of ideas.
actually when i first started making music i really didn't know what the hell should i do,so i experimented with various styles.
in that period i think i deleted most of the tracks. till then passed 2 years, and now i can say that i pretty much have an idea what music i wanna write.
as far as the finishing an track goes...i think we all need to learn how to do proper arrangement methods,so then you can have like 2 bar loop and stratch it to like 3 minutes of interresting stuff.
it's all in the arrangement gentlemans... :)
