Case (SR-71 Peacemaker): Sploink!
Motherboard: Sploink!
Processor: Sploink!
RAM: Sploink!
Hard Drive *2: Sploink!
I'm having trouble deciding on a Graphics card and a Sound card.
There's so many different models of Graphics card that it's nigh on impossible to work out which is the best!
As for the soundcard. Well, I can only go by recommendation. Obviously I'm going to want a good one as I'll be making music on this PC and I want to hook different instruments into it :)
If anyone could make suggestions as to what I should get or any component changes you would recommend then please let me know :)

As far as graphics go, go with ATI's Radeon series. I have a Radeon 9500 pro and my roomate has the model with basically the same specs in the Nvidia Geforce series.... his is always dropping the framerate and occaisonally doesn't display textures in certain games right (Max payne 2 was especially bad), and my card is always right on the money. I've owned Nvidia cards before (but never the GeForce 4 series) and wasnt impressed by them, but I have been completely satisfied with my 9500 since I got it, and still am, even though it is on the brink of being made obsolete.
As far as soundcards are concerned, it all comes down to what you want to do with your computer. If it's going to be mainly for games/listening to music/surfing the web, get yourself a Sound Blaster with some crazy surround sound speakers (they make 7.1channel now with the Audigy 2 ZS). If you want to use your computer for music production, I would recommend a Terratec soundcard or possibly a USB solution, perhaps by M-audio or Digidesign.
Hope this helps mate ;)
BAM!

That does indeed help. Thank you.
Could you possibly suggest any specific models?

just noticed the part about wanting to hook things into it...
go with terratec if you want more than 2 instruments plugged in at once, otherwise the suggestions I gave you before still apply. I think digidesign probably makes some external solutions that give lots of inputs, but dont quote me on that.

I'll investigate the Terratec then.
It'll mainly just be my clavinova plugged in but there may be some electric guitar action going on :)
Cheers for then tips :)

specific models? hmm... well, as far as terratec goes the Phase 28 offers a 24/96 interface with lots of inputs coming off as wires out the back, but if this is a little to cheap for you, the DMX6 Fire seems to be quite nice... smae 24bit/96khz digital interface, but you get the nice box with all the inputs/outputs that can either be housed in a 5.25" drive bay in your computer, or parked somewhere externally :)

Get a radeon from here
Something like the "Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600XT Ultimate" would be sweet. As for the sound card go for an Audigy 2 or something.
By the way, overclockers.co.uk is the best site I have found, maybe check their prices of the stuff you've ordered, you might save some money.

The links were just to where there was some details. I'll be doing a full price check :D
That Card looks nice and the TV-Out would be cool as I plan to have it in my record room where the TV is. Quality for films that appeared on my hard drive.

I just built my own PC, spent money on getting quality quiet components, (ukp140 on case, psu, heatsink and fan), and then found out the graphics card (radeon 9600 xt) comes with a tiny fan that's a noisy bastard. If you care about decibels then to Quiet PC, they do a graphics card with a huge but quiet heatsink.

Noise definitely comes into it. My current one is like Harrier Jump Jet.
The case I've chosen is supposedly quite quiet. I'll have a look at that site you've said though. Anything that reduces noise is good by me :)

fucking hell!
This one has two 120mm fans which should help push the air around while keeping it quiet.

make sure the video card you choose is quiet - some of them are really loud, even for people who dont care so much about noise
also get a quiet CPU fan and power supply.... if those are reall loud, the AWSOME case you have picked out will be somewhat wasted
awsome case btw
you can find all this at ww.quietpc.com
i make music w/ my computer, and i really need to silence it, its loud as a mofo

I'm pretty pleased with my choice of Case :)
When I've made a preliminary Graphics Card choice I'll e-mail the shop and manufacturer and ask for a dB rating if it's not already specified. I think that's the best way.
You're the second person to recommend quietpc.com so it's obviously a good source of quiet components. :)
BAM!
Thanks for the tips.

Bear in mind you can always get a mixer to add extra audio inputs (albeit not on different channels, but unless you're going to be playing with other people at the same time, that's not a problem) and you can get midi boxes that increase the number of midi devices that can connect to your soundcard (and function on different channels, so you could have a midikeyboard on 1, a knob box on 2 and send midi out to a drum machine and a rack synth).

Yeah, just pointing out you might like to consider a really good one with just 1*midi I/O, Line in etc. rather than a slightly inferior one (at the same price), but with more ports :)
BTW, what OS will you be running on your music machine?

I'll probably stick with the copy of XP I currently have and then upgrade to the 64 bit when it comes out. Although I'm tempted to make it Dual Boot with Linux. Why do you ask sir?

Just checked out http://www.quietpc.com/uk and they seem really good prices. Sweet!
PSU coming from there and I'm considering getting two of their 160GB drives instead of the one 250 I had planned.
Also getting the HSF for the processor from there.

Ah, just if by some weird chance you were going to be using 98 I could give you a Lexicon soundcard with 8 in, 4 out audio (and optical). Since my folks got a new PC and gave the old one away (I just used it for audio capture) I've not been able to use it.
