..tried to find an old topic about this film, proved to be hard.
so here's a new one.
just watched this last night - bought the dvd solely based on reviews I had read, on here and elsewhere.
I must say I was presently surprised - very interesting script, with only small snags - most of the character's actions seem pretty realistic. interestingly shot, very stylish. pretty good acting.
not so much scary, more continually tense, and at times VERY claustrophobic.
**SPOILERS COMING UP**
I did think the "Britain has been quarantined" idea was a bit unbelievable. if this virus is so incredibly effective, with the infected being able to spit blood as to spread infection, I think it would be almost impossible to contain.
I absolutely loved the part where Jim wants to go to see what happened to his parents - this seems like a pretty believable thing to do in a situation like this. I thought when he found his dead parents with a childhood photograph of himself in their hands was very poignant.

i love this movie
very different from your average horror flick, and shot VERY well
i LOVED the use of cameras, and filters in this (or should i say lack of filters!)
to me it looks like he used the same film and camera grade that is used for TV shows or documentaries - not usually the kind of film you use for a movie.
i think the storyline is spot on, i think the acting is great.....everything is great about this film :)

I agree! :)
love the camera effect when the infected attack. nice.
for me this also seemed one of the few horrorfilms that has geniune emotional content, as in I can relate directly to it.
and because of this film I bought the Grandaddy cd they took that song that is played under the supermarket sequence off. :)

Disappointing. I absolutely loathe the ending: when I first saw it at the cinema I thought "sweet, the plane is gonna nuke England". Then they just rescued them. Shit.

no, it wasn't.
as he says on the commentary while reading that alternative ending, it would be completely unbelievable.
it involved taking the soldiers out of the story completely. so when Frank, the big father gets infected, they now tie him up and take him along. they then stumble upon the original research facility, from the first scene.
some guy hoaled up inside says he has the answer to cure Frank - ALL his blood needs to be replaced with a healthy person's blood. Jim then agrees to do this - Frank survives and now the film ends with Jim sitting strapped on the same table the chimp in the beginning of the film is strapped to, completely enraged, with the same monitors showing random violence.
this wouldn't work, because Boyle wants you to believe earlier in the film that this virus is so incredibly volatile it will infect people within a minute when falling in their eye - so if you're going to remove this blood from a body, how are you going to clean out EVERY LITTLE DROP from the smallest arteries, etc.

yeah, i know what the set-up was... was trying not to ruin it for someone who maybe wanted to watch it and see themselves.
and i thik it wouldve been a way more intense ending. more symbolic.
sometimes you gotta say screw the science for art. since the whole science of zombies is COMPLETELY flawed and badly worked out to begin with.

I did think something similar was going to happen.
actually, I thought it would end after Jim goes nuts and kills the soldier - that Selina would hack him to pieces thinking he has been infected.
on the other hand, it was a nice switch that this DIDN'T happen. :)

they're infected by a virus which (i assume) releases too many of the chemicals that are attributed to rage

the technical definition of zombie applies.
zombies dont HAVE to be undead.
ive watched a whole thing on voodoo before. they can be simply tranced souls.

I don't think that works - zombies are mostly not "controlled".
in the case of "28 days later" a base impulse takes over and is taken to it's extreme - agression, which is vented against living creatures.

well... Danny Boyle and Alex Garland do conciously link it to zombie-films too - they say so on the commentary track, saying how Garland wanted the openingscene to be a very zombie-film-like scene, then veering away from the genre more and more while the film progresses. they also attribute certain scenes to be tributes to "dawn of the dead".
so it's not coming from nowhere.

...a lot of people call this a zombie movie. There are no zombies just infected/sick people. Zombies are the dead brought back to life...possibly infected or resserected by something, but dead to begin with.
endings are always going to suck. The last really good ending i've seen to a movie was at the end of the 'night of the living dead' at least thats the only one i can think of at the moment. movies always end with an open ended situation to make a sequal, or everyone lives and rides off in the sunset...fucking hollywood.

Did you know that the only thing the infected say throught the whole film is "I HATE YOU! "

I like how it could happen. Its scientific, not otherworldly. The ending seemed a little rushed to me, thats all. It's like the last 30 minutes of the film turned into a made for tv movie. In other films, I have been wanting to see evil dead 2. It's been a long time
