I got into a lengthy discussion today with some fellow metal heads, a punk and someone else who was neither of these things....
Basicly two of them were Americans who lived in the states their whole life and live here in Canada now. They were defending the war, and defending president Bush. I was disgusted from the get go, but it got worse.
The absolute ignorance of the whole thing was disturbing to say the least! Here are some things they said to me about it all:
-I love my freedom in America -President Bush is doing a great job -Why is it that Iraq says its going to rebuild its self and then we blow it up (and then he says "but not to diss my own country or anything)
-Nothing is banned in the states, like In canada a video game was banned and that doesnt happen here
....
the list can go on, they said lots of bad thigns like that, then when I brought up these things:
-large american corporations that have ties with bush and cheany (*gasp!*) set up shop in foreign countries and make america money
-america has been bombing the middle east for a long long time,to no avail
-the president has outright lied many times, only to be proven this days later when news stories broke out
-in canada we have more relaxed laws to just about everything, and our government is more democratic than the states's government, and we dont need to kill people for our freedom...
-there was one of the largest protests of our time EVER in iraq protesting the war there, but america did it anyway.....
i said other things too, but when I said all these things, NO response to them, they had nothing to say, then it would always end up discussing the fact that im making harsh choices because I dont live there in America and I dont know what their freedom is like.
oh and they like freedom. I feel sick, like going crazy over this.. goddamnit!

i used to think canada was just silly, but i heard today they're thinking of making mary jane available in pharmacies (to pre-approved patients), and possibly even legalize altogether at some point. now i think canada is pretty alright. i don't smoke it, but i think it should be legal.
sorry canada.

i've stated my limited defense for the use of force to remove saddam before in threads on xlt, and i guess i'll summarize them again but first i'd like to clarify a few things.
i'm not defending the bush/cheney alliance, because bush is an oilman first and foremost, and i firmly believe that cheney was put in power by daddybush and his cronies to make double sure that their interests were met, and that the people who put the bushling in power were paid back for their help.
however, the UNs reluctance to use force, while enforcing their own sanctions were killing thousands of truly innocent people (mainly women and children) every year. saddam used the sanction to starve the people who would oppose him and still fund his military and his supporters. not to mention build lavish monuments and homes for himself. not taking action was killing people every day! the simple refusal to use force was not saving lives.
AND, by the UNs own resolutions, the burden of proof that he was complying with those sanctions was directly on saddam. he refused, time and time again to comply with those resolutions. How long was the international community expected to keep enforcing sanctions that were not working, and in fact were extremely counterproductive? obviously more than a decade.
so, you have a few options:
remove the sanctions and let saddam do as he wishes. keep the sanctions on and try to keep inspections going, which IMO would never meet the burden of proof that the international community agreed were necessary for the sanctions to be lifted.
use force to remove saddam
given those choices, i believe the use of force was justified.
do i think war is a nice option? of course not. but, i don't see how not using force, and continuing down the path where saddam dictated the rules is a better option.

well, there's only 6 countries surveyed in the OECD. Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom, and U.S. So, yes there is much poverty, but not much to compare to.

U.S. propaganda.
Blows off millions to show commercials and ads for alcohol, used by imbeciles in a drunken stupor to kill 25% of America. And spends millions to show commercials and ads on bad-mouthing marijuana and showing everyone how "evil" it is, and how you automatically are inhibited by it and kill people.

Just because 1 man is out of power, does not mean that he has thousands of life-long followers still in his place; still fighting.
These people have dedicated their lives to the torture and ruling of their own people. Not to mention they live in fear for the return of their leader.
It is amazing to think how that this "new, fast-paced world" with the growing technology, that now all of a sudden people think issues can be resolved in a matter of weeks, instead of years.
But then again, if anyone strays away from the norm and does something a little 'off-beat', thanks to technology, the whole world knows about it in a matter of minutes and immediately lets their uninformed opinion direct their conscious into a blind minefield.
Oh, what has technology done to human thought. :(

Many of you don't realize that a lot of our states are like entirely different countries.
Not that this really has anything to do with Iraq, but when making judgemental stereotypes about current "America", please refrain from being oblivious to the fact that our country is not a single, uniary being.
Hell, I live in Michigan.
If I drive to Kentucky, it is almsot like an entirely different country. Not just landscapes, but the communities, thoughts, upraisings, everything.
It seems like most accusations against the U.S., and the opinions formed on American, are those formed against popular culture, things seen or read from TV, etc.
Keep in mind that these opinions you are forming against a whole could be those of a mere 10% of the popular crowd.
If many of you making subjective comments against the U.S. were to actually take a trip to someplace and stay for a while, you might actually change your mind.
But please, refrain from allowing uneducated, babbling drones of some of our current youth today, to use as your base to create an opinion and selective judgement about our country.
Such strong opinions we hold these days.
Oh, the stress.......... :(
