The movie was great, although the zombies can run in this film and that kinda goes against what weve come to know of them from various other films, this movie was awsome. The violence was great, lots of brains being shot up, tearings of flesh, chainsaw!!!, a dead fucking zombie baby in the fuckin womb!, mercy kills, fuckin running zombies over.... yeah, for someone like me, this movie was fucking a defenite A+.

Ok I haven't had time for message boards lately which is why I haven't been around much but..
I just KNEW this thread would be here :D
My thoughts, prejudices and opinions..
Firstly, this is a GOOD FILM (for once).
It can be to it's credit that they did not simply shoot it frame by frame based on the original or even use the set pieces of the original.
Sure, you have a mall, a pregnant woman and a black guy saying "When there's no more room in hell the dead will walk the earth."
The fact the zombies can RUN (something I'll come back to) exemplifies this approach: make it new and fresh but in keeping with the original in the main.
There are a number of references to classic zombie films too (at least, *I* think so..) So, you have a reference to the classic shower scene from Zombie Flesh-Eaters (where zombie crashes through door), and also to the boat floating into New York harbour.
Also, there is reference to the 'guy who has injured leg getting wheeled/dragged around by his buddies whilst shooting at the zombies' from the original DotD.
This film definately respects the classics: dark humour but not too over-played, like in the post-Evil Dead plethora of 80's films like the Return of the Living Dead series.
This means you get the classic downbeat atmosphere so well defined by Romero, and thus places this film directly into the genre (of the good ones). It even has the 'jaded zombie-hunter syndrome'!
The fact the zombies can move quickly may be contraversial, but it nevertheless was a brave move and shows the makers had more than just imitation on their minds (as in the remake of NotLD).
Also, you get the 'positive role models' a la Romero (this time more the woman than the black man) and yet this is not too heavy-handed and helps place it along side the classics of the genre.

I have to admit I was seriously impressed by the 'rock video' style credit sequence: the editing, in line with other technical issues was well done, but the music.. well I'll be damned if they didn't go and use a Jonny Cash tune and it worked so fucking perfectly that I just said fucking.
Furthermore.. the end credits took this even further and then added something that made the audience who had just got up to leave sit back down again or hang by the stairs in case they missed something!
If you are reading this you are probably interested in zombie films.. definately go see it, it's up there with the best of 'em!

Na, it's a genre thing, rather like enjoying the Godfather films doesn't mean you are into violent films per se.
As it goes, I'm not into violent films in the main, thus to claim this thread is about "violence pornography" is something of a generalization and underestimates the films somewhat.
I can see why zombie films aren't everyone's cup of tea though, but even my girlfriend liked this one and said she could watch it again o0
(Yes cos girlfriends are only usually into My Little Pony :P )

Actually, allow me to qualify the above with my 3 fave zombie romps:
Aside from the violence pornography..
For social commentry/observation see Night of the Living Dead
For social satire see Dawn of the Dead
For cinematics eg. cinematography see Zombie Flesh-Eaters
(And by the way, I was joking about girlyfriends).

violence in film does not equal violence pornography.
dawn of the dead is, in my opinion, selling the sensationalistic thrill of realistically depicted murders, which is made "acceptable" (justifying a larger body count) by making most of the victims murderous zombies.
what else is there to the genre? the genre is violence pornography, the subgenre is zombies. sure, there's a little comic relief, etc. but the show is pornographic violence. no serial murder = no show.
at least reflex is honest in that he doesn't try to justify his pleasure by praising the camarawork or the acting or the music or the comic relief.
to each their own, but i can't help but wonder "why?" when people gush about these movies.

i'd be hard pressed to name a thinner and more impotent "social commentary," honestly...
anyway, i'm not necessarily saying that every movie with a zombie or two is violence pornography, and again, nor that violence in and of itself constitutes violence pornography.
not surprisingly, i'm now off to eat some ice cream.

"at least reflex is honest in that he doesn't try to justify
his pleasure by praising the camarawork or the acting or the

No, it is not dishonest of me to point out to you that there is more to these films than you claim. I just happen to be able to point out that you made a gross generalization :)
Also, if you read what I actually said above you will see (for instance): "Aside from the violence pornography.."
Thus I in no way deny the violence or am dishonest about it.
"i'd be hard pressed to name a thinner and more impotent
"social commentary," honestly..."
Nor have I claimed that these films are particularly deep. Let me educate you sir that social commentry and satire do not HAVE to be deep to hit the mark.
Plus, for a specific example, if it can show a positive role model of a black man to the masses of the 1960's it is hardly so "thin".
"dawn of the dead is, in my opinion, selling the sensationalistic thrill of realistically depicted murders, which is made "acceptable" (justifying a larger body count)
by making most of the victims murderous zombies"
This is a good point, however, as I said, I am not usually into violent films, which surely should follow that rationale.

plaidzebra: i think yr a little off the mark saying all horror is totally devoid of artistic merit. horror is a part of life and art reflects that. if you go watch the first dead film (night), youll see theres actually a few metaphorical topics being dealt with: the race issues of the 60's (which is actually a bigger part of the films drama, if you are mindful of it), war (the idea of never being able to escape the dead or to leave with sanity intact) as well as simple psychology like "dominance". its actually quite well woven in horror films. my personal favorite horror stuff is stuff liek 28 days where the gore doesnt overshadow the story. there is a documentary out there where they talk to romero, tobe hooper and savini about their stuff. i forget the title. but anyway, savini tells some weird stories about being in vietnam as a photographer. its more deep than just chainsaw to the nuts... but there are people who only want to see that, so thats what theyre into.
sorry, just felt that needed said.
