horror is totally devoid of artistic merit.
you're putting words in my mouth, tibbar. i never said that, and i don't believe that.

anyone who's interested: i've seen "night of the living dead," and "28 days later" and many other zombie films. it's not fair to assume i am ignorant of the genre because my perspective is so radically different from yours.
i don't think that "night of the living dead" fits my criticism of some films being "violence pornography," yet i think that it gets far more credit than it deserves as "social commentary."
i don't see this in black and white terms. for example, i enjoyed certain aspects of the film "the cell," while i strongly objected to certain exploitative scenes.
i think "seven" was a very good film that was about terrible violence, but not exploitative.
in certain films, i do suggest that the "show" is violence pornography, but it would be silly to argue that there is nothing else to be admired in every film.
i don't intend to judge anyone for their preferences, but i do think this thread benefits from a minority opinion.

just got back.
it was definately good. apples & oranges when comparing it to 28 days later. dotd was straight action/horror/slasher from the very beginning. the calm tension in 28 days is what made it noteworthy.
that being said, i liked dawn of the dead a whole lot more than 28 days.
if you go, make sure you stay throughout the credits. the movie's not over until after the credits roll.LAZY_TITLE

It's too bad I'm so socially inept, otherwise I'd go see it in theaters. I guess I'll hunt it down on Soulseek, then! Been getting the mixed-est of reviews so far... I kind of want to lick Sarah Polley so I know I'll like it at least a bit.

i wasnt putting anythign in your mouth i didnt see as being implied. sorry if i offended you.
it's odd, because i had heard this movie wasn't as violent as expected actually, so i find the pornography violence thing a little odd.
guess ill have to go check it out myself.
but i do agree that carnage for the sake of carnage is just rediculous. the whole manhunt gta3 thing is just stupid.

Enjoyable. Just take it with a pinch of salt, unlike plaidzebra here, who seems to have conduceted an academic study into its social connotations.

i'm not sure a pinch of salt will change my opinion.
feel free to express your thoughts in more than a pithy dismissal of the person you disagree with horsefactory. you could even tell us what you think in a few sentences, and we won't think you're pretentious for doing so.
and i'll take you with a little pinch of salt.

i'll take you with a little pinch of salt. As should everyone.
I said what I wanted to say: I enjoyed the film but it was just a bit of fun. I do not feel the need to write a lengthy post explaining this. It's hardly something that is worth taking seriously or spending time thinking about. Sumbit to your instincts and have a grand time watching people getting their necks ripped off. Yeah!

movies that don't force you to contemplate deeper philosophical points have their place.
sitegags & mindless humor are nice sometimes. action flicks can be done well.
dawn of the dead was a very well done movie for it's genre, and i enjoyed it.
and that's all i have to say about that.

I don't think the original "dawn of the dead" is such a great social satire - I mean, the mall filled with zombies thing is funny, but not very profound.
I like much more the sense of a society disintegrating and the choices people make within that context.
another good point about the original DotD is the superb build-up in tension.
I don't see it as "violence pornography" at all.

you're talking to someone who liked "dumb and dumber."
i don't apply the same critique to every film.
i just thought i'd raise a minority opinion in the spirit of the board.
no one is wrong necessarily to enjoy seeing humans dismembered. i just wonder what motivates people to enjoy that spectacle, when there is little else beyond the spectacle.

dumb and dumber was OK.. haha.. but dawn of the dead fucking ruled.
it was very very well done for a movie of its kind and i thought the violence was just fuckin great! it was entertaiment, and thats why i pay the money i do to go see a movie in the theater. goddamn what a sweet film it was.

admittedly i was speaking in the context of reflex's reaction to the remake of dotd (not the original, or all "horror" movies).
in your opinion, are there any valid examples of "mainstream" violence pornography?

maybe Peter Jackson's "bad taste" and "braindead" could be seen as violence pornography?
those films are incredibly funny to me - completely over the top.

does the new DOTD jump into the story like the old one?... i like that.
(imagine they did the same thing with "aliens 5"... just jump right the hell in there and let us find out what the fucks going on, who the jaysus is who, etc only half way through!)
I rented DOTD original on the weekend just to get my juices going and it was pretty cool. Love the blue jahovas guy!

That scene disturbed you the most too?
It gave me the same feeling I got when I was a kid (new to violence in movies) and someone got killed in the movie, and nobody cared, they just continued on like nothing happened. I always thought "That is terrible, that guy just died and nobody cared" and i would get that golf ball feeling in my throat for a while.
A good example is in Robocop where that guy crashes into the toxic waste vat, then wanders into the street with melting skin and his fellow henchmen run him over and turn the windshield wipers on. Hm, maybe I'm reading into this too much, or I am oversensitive or something. Of course the guy was a criminal too, but he was human, and about to die. It usually happened that this type of victim was a henchman. But they never appeared too mean, kind of like they just needed a job and couldn't get one anywhere else, or had no marketable skills.

Oh ya, another thing that bothered me was when they would show the villain leader (no movie in particular) and he would kill his own men. That always made me sad.
My reaction is in the past tense even though it still does bother me, I just don't take it seriously because, well, its hollywood.
