An Open Letter to the People of Spain

by Laura Mansfield, analyst
http://www.homelandsecurityus.com/

The terrorist attack that massacred 200 of your countrymen,
and injured over a thousand, was a horrific act. The world
grieves with you. We all know it could have happened to our
people in our countries just as easily as it happened in
Madrid last Thursday.

But no matter how tragic and horrible that act was, it was
not a victory for the terrorists.

The victory for the terrorists in Spain came on Sunday.

The professed goal of the attack, according to numerous Al
Qaeda communiques, was to punish Spain for its support of
the United States in the war against Iraq.

Sunday, in your free elections, you voted to place the
communist party in power. This morning your new leadership
announced that it would withdraw the Spanish troops from
Iraq, and in effect abandon the coalition.

Your actions proved beyond the shadow of a doubt to Al Qaeda
that if they kill enough people in a mass casualty attack
that they can swing the popular vote. You've proved that
they can influence elections.

You have just guaranteed that the United States will sustain
a mass casualty terrorist action on our soil before our
November elections. After all, maybe we too can be
frightened into a policy of isolationalism. You probably
also doomed Tony Blair's government in England to the same
fate. How many will die in terror attacks in the United
States and England in order for the terrorists to try and
intimidate us?

In 1937, your countryman Pablo Picasso created a masterpiece
depicting the horrors of wars in Guernica.

That same year, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain
made this statement: "We should seek by all means in our
power to avoid war, by analyzing possible causes, by trying
to remove them, by discussion in a spirit of collaboration
and good will." He entered into a policy of appeasement with
Germany, instead of taking a stand and drawing a line in the
sands of time. The end result was that Adolf Hitler had more
time to strengthen his

hold on power and perpetrate a holocaust not just on the
Jews of Germany, but on much of Europe.

At the same time, your countrymen were giving their lives in
a struggle for freedom in Spain.

You were not afraid in 1937. Where is the courage of 1837?

The message you sent to Al Qaeda yesterday was clear.
"Please don't threaten us; please don't kill our people;
we'll do what you want us to do."

Why are you allowing the terrorists to intimidate you now?
Why do you let them win?

What happened?

I leave you now with the words "Asta la Vista". Call us when
you need us. You will be calling; your actions in response
to the Madrid terrorism attack guaranteed it. And when you
call us, we will come and help. Even if Al Qaeda threatens
us and attacks us. We don't let fear cower us into
appeasement or surrender. That's the kind of people we are.

For me it is a victory for the Spanish people, 90% of the
Country opposed the war in Iraq and they should not suffer
because of the Governments actions.

Now Al Qaeda must be thinking they can bomb the US again to
get rid of George Bush if they do it a few days before the
election. (of course it will never work because Diebold has
rigged all the voting machines, but...)

the spanish people voted like this because they will not
allow the lies and manipulation of an ignorant government
dictate their foreign policy. and they believe that the
decisions of their government have directly led to them
being targetted by terrorists and the subsequent tragedy.
they will not allow their government to go unchallenged for
putting the people in the firing line, so that the fatcats
can profit.

I think we can all learn a lot from Spain right about now...

Yeah, the impression I get from the news is that the Spanish
people rejected the PP because they believed they were
involved in a cover up, not because the bombs were planted
by Al Qaeda.

"Revolutions in the rich, presently imperialist countries
like the US are necessary to open the door to real,
worldwide socialism. Without a capitalist US to crush or
smother other revolutions, they will explode everywhere,
like fireworks on the Fourth of July. And they will be able
to move forward into shared wealth instead of being stuck at
trying to equalize poverty.

When you consider that the wealth of the richest three
individuals on earth is greater than the combined gross
national product of the 48 least developed countries (with
their 600 million people), this perspective is no utopian
dream, but just logical fact."

Al Qaeda claimed responsibility on the day it occured to an
Arab media station who reported it. ETA "emphatically
denied" having anything to do with it. The Spanish
government chose to completely ignore both of these facts
and still insisted ETA played some part in it. It was a
sick reaction to sad situation, similar to the email that
was sent within the UK goverment after 9/11 saying that "now
would be a good time to release any bad news you want
buried"

Like Sharon is completely guilt free. Shut the fuck up.

Al Qaeda only came into existance because the US turned
their back on Afghanistans and Arabs who helped the US
during the cold war.

Also there is supposed to be proof that shows Mossad are
responsible for setting up fake Al Qaeda cells within
Palastinian areas to justify attacks.

War on Terrorism.

That line is so fucking stupid !
You can't fight a war on terrorism but you can attack
problems from the ground up and create a society thru real
dialoge where desperate actions are no longer necesary .
Its like people think having more police officers will
reduce crime , when the best (proven) way is real social
reforms.
Stupid fucking rightwing shit that people acept cause
rightwing politics is sort of housebroken and the "norm".

it's true that al qaeda was in part trained by the us.
that was a big mistake. however to blame the islamo facist
movement on the us would be foolish if you have studied
history. islam has been try to counqer the world since it's
inception.. spain was conquered mostly by 756 Ad and the
muslims ruled at least part of it until 1492. ever heard of
the ottoman empire? another powerful muslim theocracy who
ruled much of europe for centuries.
the attacks sadden me and the fact that the socialist are
in power is also very sad.. because socailism hurts everyone
in involved from job creation down to take the motivation
away to work. Why are birthrates the lowest in the world in
Europe/? probably becuase the goverment will take care of
you from birth to death. ah well i could go on but it would
probably fall on death ears.

Al Qaeda were obviously wrong for doing what they did, but
they are a very professional organisation with a
decentralised structure and the US government is very right
to be afraid of them...the only problem is that you can't
fight against an army that doesn't really exist. The cells
are free to operate relatively autonomously, they have been
given a very broad objective and good training...it is a
group of people working towards an ethos rather than a
physical goal, you can't fight against that.

The Christians are hardly historically guilt free
themselves, but history is written by the 'winners'. In
fact Bush himself justified his "war on terror" as a
"christian duty". Also it's funny how it has only been US
citizens who have this strong anti socialist view point.

A very polarised argument here. Americans see very different
things on their news, compared to Europeans. Of course both
sides have different explanations for this, but I'd go with
Chomsky's, anyday.

Cfern:
>Why are birthrates the lowest in the world in Europe
I don't get whats wrong with low birthrates??

'Analyst' Laura Mansfield:
>You have just guaranteed that the United States will
sustain
>a mass casualty terrorist action on our soil before our
>November elections.
A bit alarmist surely ...
Is she trying to say that Al Qaeda would not even have had
the idea of attacking the US again until they noticed the
results of the spanish elections??

Does Laura Mansfield believe in democracy, or not?
(A rhetorical question obviously....)
