Opening weekend in the US and it has totally tanked, taking just $2.7 million and 11th place compared to the $50.8 million of the village.

I'm sure it will please some people. In fact, according to the IMDb, over 50% of people have given it at least 7/10. However, 23% have given it 1/10 so....

although I do vote for films on IMdb, I don't take the scores very seriously.
especially if you see what's in the top 100.
about a week ago I saw a guy on one of the IMdb boards that had as a signature: "The Matrix is the Citizen Kane of our time".
that made me laugh.

I would sooner have The Matrix over Citizen Kane any day. At least I found The Matrix entertaining, Citizen Kane is one of the most tediously boring films I have ever seen.

let's take the top 10:
1. 9.0 Godfather, The (1972) 99,595 2. 8.9 Shawshank Redemption, The (1994) 122,760 3. 8.9 Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The (2003) 69,829
4. 8.8 Godfather: Part II, The (1974) 58,901 5. 8.8 Shichinin no samurai (1954) 25,266 6. 8.7 Schindler's List (1993) 83,473 7. 8.7 Casablanca (1942) 56,550 8. 8.7 Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The (2002) 90,560
9. 8.7 Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The (2001) 132,686
10. 8.7 Star Wars (1977)
I'm not even talking about the LotR films - they should drop in the next ten years or so (don't get me wrong, I really like the LotR films, but they shouldn't be in the top 10..).
now.. "the shawshank redemption" on 2..? "schindler's list" on 6? both films are seen as being better than "casablanca". or "rear window". or "dr. strangelove". or "taxi driver", etc.

The trouble is that you're measuring it against your own personal preferences.
The top 100 is an accumulation of the opinions of all those people who have bothered to vote and is by definition a more accurate reflection of the views of movie goers as a whole.
While people are inevitibly going to disagree when it comes to comparing their favourite films with those of other people, the top 100 (and indeed the whole IMDb rating system) is a good general indicator of how good a film is likely to be. Take a film with a rating of 8.0 and the chances are that most people will indeed find it better than a film with a rating of 6.0.

yeah, I do like to measure other people's opinions to my own. that's completely warranted if you look to the IMdb scores whether you'll probably like a film or not, which is what you seem to be doing.
I see such a big discrepancy between my opinions and how the average IMdb-visitor rates films, that I put little trust into that system to tell me whether I might like a film or not.
