this is the version without the girl/boy single attached. so
please don't discuss any of the girl/boy b-sides. they
aren't part of this album, just a bonus for the US

It's pretty good...'4' is a fantastic tune. Though, I much
prefer µ-Ziq's 'Lunatic Harness.'

I can't be arsed with it. 4, Yellow Calx and Girl/Boy are
great, the rest fucks around without doing anything
pleasurable to my ears. My least favourite Aphex album.
Except Classics.

One of my favourite albums ever. Considering it is fairly
short, it is jam packed full of quality.
If I were to try and get someone into electronic music, this
would be the thing to play to them.

I beleive this is an album which no one can truly dislike.

It's OK. The childish, overtly happy and sickly sweet simple
melodies do get on my tits though, even if they are against
insane drumbeats. It's quirky, I'll give it that.

i love this album

my fave track is probably Yellow Calx, i have a sample of
the middle section of the track as my ringtone on my Nokia
7650

i just think that this album has a certain feel to
it.....certainly different to drukQs.......i mean the
mastering and eveyrthing, i dunno......to me it kinda has an
analog feel to it

maybe i'm wrong again

anyways, i love this album

9/10

its a good album, dont get me wrong - but its far from being
my favourite aphex release. there are some great moments -
but i dont find it consistent enough - and for such a short
album, thats a bit disappointing.
i got into aphex some time before this album was released. i
loved 'classics' + 'i care because you do' (as well as the
fantastic polygon window record). the 'selected ambient
works' lps were lush too, especially 'sawII' - so when the
rdj album came out i was surprised that it didnt have as
great an impact on me as richard's former releases.
to me it represents a transition between analogue + digital.
a period of experimentation with far more choppy percussion
which hits as often as it misses for me. i think the
directions richard james explored on this album were
rendered far more convincingly on later releases -
particularly drukqs.

but like i said - dont get me wrong - i do like it. just not
as much as his other albums.

i like the sleeve art a lot though. the skin-collage on the
back cover is great.

this is my least favorite aphex, but it has some of his best
tracks, namely 4, weakling, fingerbib, cornish acid. for
me, g/b song is just ok, it sounds too melodramatic or
something. logon rock witch is by far his worst track.

offline nacmat on 2004-09-12 08:18 [#01332577]

love it, but its very much the same mood throught the whole
album

and it is really more an ep I would say

not just that it is short, but it also has that feel of an
ep instead of an album... like much more precise ... or
better said... a narrower exposure than what you expect from
an album

underwhelming.

Corn Mouth builds up so wonderfully, the drums are like
being punched in some hypnotic rhythm, and the tune is so
oddly uplifting. Then what happens, it skips and smashes on
the floor, only 2:30 minutes in. Disappointing.

i think of the rdj lp as the us version, with the extra
tracks on the end, and i still see your point. great things
happen too quickly on this release.

4, fingerbib, girlboy, weakling child, goon gumpas, yellow
calx... what can i say? a bit short?
the beggining of actual afx sound.
8/10.

Sorry if I'm including the Girl/Boy bonuses, but that's how
I always listened to this CD, and it was the third
installment I purchased of Richard. It is a quite solid
release that will always hold great memories and at every
new listen, I seem to think how much I thought this was
really intricate and complicated stuff before, but it's not
that much once I listen to it every time and
again........... 9.2/10

fav. track(s) - Fingerbib/Goon Gumpas/GirlBoysong(snare rush
mix)

essential.
melodically, harmonically and rhythmically sound, it has a
nice DIY feel to it. i recommend this version (minus the
girl/boy b-sides) for a more consistant listen. there is no
filler, it's great.

I first loved it, then I got a little tired of it... like it
was too pop
too cartoney

but listening today in the cold grey day makes me feel warm
... lots of memories come to mind... and lets be fair...
this has some of the best melodies ever composed in the 20th
century

beautiful

yeah yeah, its a weird one cos sometimes i love it but
sometimes its mood is too much for me, but still, great
album (15 tracks mind you)

'the beggining of actual afx sound.'
*cough cough* ... hangable auto bulb?
