I'll agree with you, even though some people will say they
are still on it.

OK was the pinnacle of Radiohead awesomeness

even 'amnesiac' *!shock!* but 'hail to the thief' was
*shockingly* horrible in my opinion...

httt isn't "horrible" imo, but it is definately their
weakest.

each track is pretty good on it's own, but they come
together pretty lack-luster.

i used to love kid a, i still like some tunes, and also some
from amnesiac and httt. mostly those songs that are more
rock oriented, they should really keep doing that instead of
this artsy stuff - but appearntly this is what critics and
their fans like...

Now come on, OK Computer is pretentious as hell, sounds
downright silly.

But I can forgive that because on this masterpiece, they
back their shit up with awesome tunes.

Ok Computer is great. I`ve noticed that when they play the
Ok Computer material live these days it doesn`t sound as
passionate or as well played as their 1997-1998 period. Same
applies for the Bends material. Maybe the like to
concentrate on the new songs and practice and develop them
more.

REALLY pretentious. ;-)

I still like everything they've done, I like Kid A just
about as much as OK, but there's this silliness in their
lyrics and everything I can't shake, a self conscious lack
of humor and joy, I find it tough to swallow. I think
they're brilliant though.

after ok computer they just got deeper and deeper into
experimenting with electronic sounds and it just doesn't fit
them. they were clearly looking up to idm, probably just
because they thought it's a cool thing to do, just so they
are remembered as inovators or something. i think they are
trying too hard to impress the media, critics and their
fans. they got this famous for doing good rock music and
they should stick with that. im constantly having this
feeling they are so full of them selves they think
everything they do is pure gold and by the feedback they get
from their fans it obviously is :).
not to say just bad things tho, kid a and amnesiac both
sound alright but they're just to cheesey for my taste to
take them seriously. basically it's just them thinking
they're doing something breathtaking (if they wouldn't think
this they would probably stop doing this kind of stuff after
kid a). they're way over hyped, especially from people that
have no idea what idm is, so they just think radiohead are
pioneers or something, and all this hype about them got
seriously into their minds. ofcourse all this is just in my
head, but i can't help myself not to think that for spme
reason :).

anyway, this is "i like" radiohead topic os i better stop
with this haha.

i can definitely see what you mean... and i worry about
those who don't know much about idm thinking they are insane
electronic musicians or something... there's this one track
in particular on httt that i'm thinking of in particular...

that said, i think tracks like tree fingers, and kid a are
beautiful, however uninnovative they might be... and i'd
also say that a track like idioteque, wasn't that far from
being an innovator itself (as far as its relation to
glitch-rock type stuff which you'll find nowadays)...

and ultimately, i want them to express themselves how they
want to express themselves... if they really only experiment
because they want to seem groundbreaking, i feel sorry for
them... but i have a hard time believing, that they would
slog through 3 whole albums without a sincere belief that
they are doing what they are doing because they want to...

ultimately, i'd say i'm only a lukewarm fan of any of their
releases... they all seem pretty nice, but i don't find
myself listening to them all that much...

i'm glad that you were able to back your opinion up,
though... because it seems, that too often, people don't
have good reasons for liiking or disliking stuff...

if i wasn't in the middle of readings for my science fiction
course, i would now try to coerce a reason out of you as to
why you agree with plaidzebra's heathen statements about the
beautiful piece of art that is "tides"... i just might be
forced to kill you for that... ;)

ok computer is the most rockish one, kid a is the most
experimental one, amnesiac is experimental as well (but i
only listened to it like twice, so i can't really tell) but
i like it less to kid a, httt is almost back to rock style.

You know by definition the word pretentious is one who
projects themselves to be something that they fall horribly
short of achieving, and are generally just a bad characature
of what they are trying to portray. Pretention usually also
implies an air of pompousness about what this artist or
group feels they are doing. In contrast I think Radiohead
effectivly pull off the type of sound they go for with
integrity, maturity and even a sense of humility.

Many of their fans like what they are doing now, but I think
a lot of their older fans want them to go back to fitting in
better with the blur and oasis. I think with an album like
httt they tried to include something for the art croud and
the pop croud while still trying new sounds and styles.

offline glasse from Harrisburg (United States) on 2004-01-16 15:50 [#01036830]

I agree that OK Computer was one of their greatest albums,
but I am also glad that they didn't try to rewrite that
album instead of Kid A. A lot of the art fans think that
Kid A was the album they broke through with, but I disagree.
I think OK Computer is just as art as Kid A or anything
after, even with the rock sensibility.

I own amnesiac and Httt, and i'm not sure about amnesiac, it
has some great tunes, but some arent yet for my taste. And i
really really love Httt, one of the best records in a long
time, it has grown so much on me. So i might check out Ok
Computer. And it has to be good because Q magazine said it
was the best record of all time. hehe.

Hey btw OK Computer is more structured like httt, but it is
very very melancholy. Has a very dream like quality in the
production, like it is somehow detached or occuring slightly
below present. Kid A is somewhat similar to Amnesiac and
stronger as a whole. Once again Amnesiac could be
considered the follow up outtake EP to Kid A.

let's see if i can add anything to what i was saying in the
morning.
"if they really only experiment
because they want to seem groundbreaking, i feel sorry for
them"
i'd love to know this for sure. i don't think they're doing
it strictly for the fans or something, im sure they must
like what they're doing, they started experimenting, they
got brilliant response from people and then they just
continued doing that. basically anything they release or do
gets big positive response and they don't seem to mind that
too much - and judging on that all this hype about them got
into their heads, at least a little heheh. i have no idea
why there is such a big difference in popularity compared to
other bands/artists that plays simmilar stuff. let's take
their more experimental side, it isn't all that different to
aphex (it is to an "experienced" listener tho hahaha) and
aphex is like biggest idm star and imo he could be just as
popular as radiohead are, but (again imo) he's doing
everything to maintain his level of popularity, he's not
selling out, though if he wanted im sure he could.

i remember when kid a was released (i wasn't into idm as
much as i am now, not even close) i was totally blown away
by it, i was playing it constantly and enjoying it very very
much. then after a while i started getting into lots of
other artists and i forgot about radiohead for a while. last
year after couple of years i listened to kid a and it
sounded totally shitty (and im being totally honest here)
and i was quite shocked at how lame it sounded, especially
cos i loved it once. i'll have another listen and see if i
still think the same though :).

about "tides" - nothing much to it really, it's the same
problem i have with autechre - their music sound extremly
"mechanical", cold...and i love warm, cheesey sounds :).
