You say decks... presumably that means two... presumably that means you'll want a mixer as well?

Decks: ok if you want them for listening ONLY, ie no DJing, get some rega planars or something which are good. technics 1210s or 1200s (theyre the same except colour) are good, and you can dj with them.
if you just want a deck and you dont/cant spend some (any) money get a cheap belt drive deck. but id recommend getting direct drive. especially if planning to dj with them. basically my advice from a djing point of view is if you can afford it get, vestax pdx2000, or technics 1210/1200. if on a budget, get cheap direct drive, if on a tight budget get belt drive. if you wanna get belts, get a gemini or something, not some argos homemix or anything, but gemini or citronic or hell even kam, is better than things like argos homebrand. if its just for undiluted expensive quality listening planars, ok?
as for mixers, get a vestax, or pioneer or rane. basically, you get what you pay for. look back at some of my previous posts over the last few months, im sure ceri and i have discussed decks recently.

I would of bought it this month, but the clutch went on my car which has set it back. Plan is to buy it middle of next month and live on birthday money through March :)
I've searched high and low and the cheapest I've found it for is £349 (I know, I know, it used to be £345 everywhere, I should of bought it last summer). Don't suppose you know of anywhere that does it cheaper than that?

my first setup cost about £350 and it took me over a year to save the money. at the time i was about 15 working saturdays in a local independant hardware store with 5 other people for 20 quid a day. while i was waiting for my decks, i used my stereo system with built in record platter, and disconnected one speaker so i could use the pan slider as a crossfader.ohh and the homemade paper slip mats. those were the days......

I broke a belt scratching on my old hifi as a teenager. I used to use the master fader as a crossfader. When I decided to finally get a setup I saved for about 6 months while I was working full time and still went overdrawn to buy it. Still, I've never regretted it and they're something that have given me hours of use and even made me money (through the skills I've practiced on them as well as actually using them).
I take it from the price you bought a brand new budget setup rather than a second hand one of technics/whatever?

yeah, brand new budget setup, still using decks, which are surprisingly good for the money, but i really do need 1210s/pdxs now cos i can to flares, orbits, crabs, etc really well, but cant speed up as much as id want due to the decks not being up to it. even so, they have lasted a hell of a long time! stanton str8-60s are hella good! but 1210s are better! sound familiar?

Yes- my best mate has got str8-60s, they are certainly the best belt drive decks I've used. The lack of torque can be a pain when scratching, but they keep time suprisingly well for beat mixing.

no theyre direct drive. i think you are thinking of the 840s. theyre the belt ones. the 860s are direct and have an above average amount of torque for the price.

Ah, it was Str-50s I was thinking of... I've not used any stanton direct drive tables. I think they (all stanton decks- they all look alike except for the latest ones) have the nicest appeareance of all decks.
