I was just going to post something on that! Anyway i'll be
getting on as soon as they are released. Hope the design is
more similar to the second generation of ipods though, I
dont really like the buttons above the wheel.

instead of little beeps and what-not when you press a
button, you would hear "HA HA HAAAAAAAA" instead.

or "phwoooaaaaarr!!"

..

could I have one with Kenneth Williams's face?

it would go "Ooooooh, Matron..!"

I got a little Sony mp3 CD player - sounds great, and I
don't mind that it only holds 7 or 8 albums worth of Lame
VBR mp3s on a CD-RW.

It's great when I'm downtown and I've just picked up a new
CD - I can listen to it over my general tao's chicken. Try
doing that with an iPod.

I figure it should last me until the only way to get music
is to line up and have the RIAA guy shoot a nanochip into
your ear.

one disc has 24 hours of music on it.

That's excellent- 1gb is enough for me, if these use a
different battery source I may well get one.

Ooo! Did you get the D-NE711? I actually haven't tried the
Atrac encoding yet. If I'm going to waste time encoding
something, it's going to be something universally compatible
like mp3.

I got the D-NE511. but I do use Atrac and Atracplus, yes.

that disc of 24 hours is made with the higher quality
Atracplus files. BUT BE WARNED! the software is utterly
CRAP.
there is NO way to save your "work" while making files,
combined with the fact that the Atrac software is very, very
unstable.

one evening I was making Atrac files for about 4 hours,
almost done, the program collapses. there is no way of
recalling the files - which is silly, because they are still
there in a temp folder until you re-open the program.

what a crap idea.

best thing you can do, but quite timeconsuming, is first
make mp3s out of what you want and then make Atrac files out
of those mp3s - you can fit a LOT on one disc, with little
further loss in soundquality.

The Atrac codec is pretty old - the first version was used
in Sony's minidisc players. I'm not convinced it sounds
anywhere near as good as some of the opensource codecs like
Lame MP3 or Ogg Vorbis, where dozens if not hundreds of
obsessive-compulsive developers are peer reviewing the code.
Still I think I'll make one atrac disk just to compare the
quality.

Four hours to burn a CD?! It takes me a couple of minutes to
burn 7 or 8 albums on a 10x CD-RW. And I can save my
songlists in Nero...

yeah but I mostly choose specific tracks to encode, not
complete albums.

and I'm not talking 7 or 8 albums, more round 22, 23 -
timewise.

well duh, why use compression in the first place.

and like I said, the quality isn't too bad.

the new ipods sound gay. flash memory? different colors?
sound like they are trying to market towards 13 year old
girls. I'll keep my 10gig industrial looking ipod, thanks.
