And All That Could Have Been, lots on nice melodic stuff like 'a warm place' on the bonus disc 'Still'. Disk one is a live best of, so its a perfect place to start.

I wouldn't do that - live is always different to the originals.
besides, his albums work better if listened to in one go.

Broken was my first exposure to NIN. I clearly remember watching Headbangers Ball on MTV and seeing the video for Wish when i was in highschool. I bought the album the next day. NIN eventually became my favorite band and really got me interested in music. So for that reason, Broken is probably my favorite NIN album but The Downward Spiral would be a close close second.

Best stuff to listen to first (in order)
Broken EP Fixed EP The Downward Spiral
Broken is SO fucking sinister it's untrue - I just love this work, I hope that someday Rezzo will come back to this kind of sound...it's genius.
Fixed is great because of the Happiness In Slavery version and Screaming Slave.
The Downward Spiral is just awesome - IMO the defenition of Industrial music.

i started with Pretty Hate Machine, it was the easiest for me to get into but it all depends which musical places you come from! anyway it's a classic, though different and less "refined" than the rest. (some tracks are much better live than in their studio version also, like Terrible Lie which is ok in Pretty Hate Machine but great in the And All That Could Have Been live...)
the Broken EP is good too, it's the most important NIN release after the three albums i'd say... it's violent and seems to deal with the subject of man vs. machine in general! - the Fixed EP is ok but frankly not essential...
The Downward Spiral is the most well-known NIN album, if there was only one NIN album left it would be this one... it's a concept-album also, each track being a "chapter" of a "story" if you want... also it includes the famous "Closer" and "Hurt", and some of the best songs in the world ever IMO: "Ruiner" and "The Becoming"...
there are some very, very nice remixes on Further Down The Spiral too, don't be put off by the fact that it's a remix album - it's really worth it and quite often goes "further" than the original tracks...
The Fragile is my favourite album of his, it's a double album, not a concept-album but still a masterpiece in my opinion.... with slightly less angst also, and more instrumentals... the beginning with the first three tracks is sublime, you pass from anger and frustration to calming down and sadness, then peace and beauty...

Broken EP - especially track #6, love that song...the extra songs #97-98 & 99 are cool too.
Downward Spiral - essential, I'll be careful and say it's the definition of "industrial-sounds" music, not to be mistaken with the genre, Industrial.
Closer remix EP - there's one particular track on this that gave me nightmares for weeks when I was like 13, I loved it so much. I'd put my headphones on and fall asleep to it.

alright, i think every person should listen to pretty hate machine...one of the best albums of all time, and like it was mentioned above, nin albums are meant to be listened to in their entirety...not just skipping through songs...
if you like melodic stuff check out 'still' which was released with 'and all that could have been' as the second disc or you can buy it as a single...it's got a lot of stripped down songs using pianos and acoustic beats...very nice to chill out to
but the live stuff is great to as it's always different from the album version and even varies from show to show even...
btw, can you tell i like NIN yet???
