They're not so different. Fractals and procedural textures
are both a field of mathmatics and can be counted as
(admittedly generative) "visual art".

you could even say that math is music...

anybody ever seen the movie PI

i really think shit can work like that, with patterns being
recognized...after all, everything around us involves
numbers and patterns in those numbers...including nature
itself, so why not say you could find a pattern in the stock
market...

but after seeing that movie, i don't think i'll try!!!
