Draft 7.30 doesn't sound good through headphones

While a lot of Ae albums improve when listened to through
headphones, I find Draft (with it's lack of stereo movement
and a lot of "mono" tracks) pales in comparison compared to
when listened to through nice big speakers. Track2 and
Surripere (the drums) and some other tracks just don't sound
as good through headphones....with more panning or stereo
effects they'd work better imo.

Not dissing the album here, and yes I do have a nice pair of
headphones thanks.

i'd agree with you on the ep7 topic you made exactly like
this, for different reasons, but for this i have no idea
what you're talking about.

i disagree. but i mostly listen to it on vinyl. maybe that
makes a difference.

i sort of agree..i would love to hear this ultra loud in a
dark, empty movie theater by myself.

i think the best way to listen to music is to use speakers
and headphones at the same time. you get all the
head phucking spacial goodness as well as the gut bubbling
bass treats.

maybe it's your headphones

or just you

all AE albums sound delicious to me whether on speakers or
headphones

Maybe you should run the entire album through an auto pan.

either that or set up two speakers very far apart and run
back and forth between them,

offline disasemble from United States on 2003-12-23 14:31 [#01003387]

draft 7.30 is very mono sounding in general. comparitively
speaking to other autechre albums, its just blatantly
obvious to me. when i listen to previous autechre albums,
the tracks have more stereo width. things dont have to pan
in order for something to sound "stereo", draft just has
this mono static sound to it when i listen to it. doesnt
really mean its bad though, just something i've noticed.

'nuff said.

Or to be more specific. They've become lazy, and just like
for us to pay money to listen to them wank off. Their live
shows are the proof of that.

And if anyone thinks I'm uninformed. You're worng. I know
how they used to be quality wise. And it just doesn't show
anymore.

In my opinion (which everyone will consider the wrong one) I
think that they have become too experimental, their music
doesn't even sound like anything anymore. In my opinion it
went like this

Incunabula - A+
Amber - A+
Tri-Repetae++ - A
Chiastic Slide - B
Autechre (LP5) - C-
Confield - F

I never bought Draft 7.30, after listening to Confield I
don't think I wan't to. There are a ton of better albums I'd
spend my money on.

Might be Noel Sommerville's mastering?

Didn't they used to use that Frank geezer? Can't remember
his name now.

i totallly agree with you on that point - but i foolishly
bought the last two ae cd's only to auction them off on ebay
cos i knew i'd never waste time listening to them again

I don't mean to be cruel, but it's almost as if they're
trying to abandon the name Autechre all together. There is
no more photos or extras for them @ warp records website.
And their live shows have gone completely sideways. They
don't play any actual songs live anymore.

It seems to me that SKAM is where their hearts are at now.
Gerscom and the other projects are probably where they have
their sites set.

Good logic, two albums and an EP in two years shows they are
abandoning the name.

Spacecadet: You just made that up...they haven't said they
are sueing anyone...in fact Warpmart are selling the ae
album.

maybe four tet.

Hey Ecnadniarb - I was referring to the quality of the work
put out under the name of Autechre. They really may be
letting it go on purpose is what I was saying. You have to
admit. They're really aren't creating the calibur of "music"
(If you can call it that anymore) that they once did.

Dunno, Confield is my favourite release of theirs and I
really like Gantz Graf as well. Draft had it's moments.

i know people who hate the new stuff, love the old. and i
also know people who hate the old stuff, and like the new.

also, i know people who just flatout hate autechres music.
or ones that love every bit of it.

nobody is wrong here. nobody has to admit anything that you
think.

I do think production values have faltered on Draft though,
even though I quite like it. It lacks the polish of older
stuff, and in places even seems thrown together, if you get
me.

I think they are going for a grittier sound. I don't think
it has anything to do with them being lazy or whatever. I
am sure they could recreate the production quality of LP5 if
they wanted to. Their more recent releases are difficult
for some people whereas the older stuff tends to be more
accessible.

funny how with each album less and less people like it, and
say it's too much of something

it's always "too much" of something, or "not enough" of
something

realize the patterns - and watch out, these kinds of people
are also professional journalists

who was that moron saying SURRIPERE had too many conga
drums? yeah thats what i'm talking about

why do gantz graf and draft 7.30 seem like a stumble to you?

offline ymenard on 2003-12-23 20:09 [#01003730]

Again I'll say it, Draft7.30 is ruined by fucking cheap-o
normal percussions that nobody wants to hear on Autechre
albums, imho. They also like to take the piss off the
listener, at mid-point during their tracks.

It's the opposite of Confield.

Hmmm, i think this could be a transition album kind of like
chiastic slide? Chiastic slide to me is very ropey in places
and sounds like a band conflicted with ideas.

I think maybe they are reassesing what they are doing.

I have also noticed there is trend of stuff sounds draft
like meam for instance, i would have to check out some of
the more recent skam stuff to find out though.

I think draft sounds half finished, like a bunch of sketches
i also though at first listen that it was a conflict between
freeform and structure and it's like they couldn't be arsed
to finish up half the tracks properly or maybe i don't "get
it" but the main point is as that i have the same problem
with chiastic slide as well, it might mean tha the next
stuff they release will be up to their previous standard.

I am fully aware of that but you would of thought it being
DRAFT 7 revision 30 that it might be a bit more cohesive and
a bit more thoughtfully laid out, there still a couple of
fucking corking tracks on there though.

offline k_maty on 2003-12-23 21:24 [#01003769]

well i was agreeing with the "half finished" part of your
previous post, but about the name DRAFT 7.30 i think naming
it "draft" is kind of showing us fans that its just a draft.
well all of their stuff is a sort of draft anyway.
