Plaid's twisty melodies

Have you ever sat down with a keyboard and tried to follow
the melodies in Itsu or Zeal? Damn that's some clever tricky
shit they got goin on.

Zeal especially -

I find it hard to tell how they composed such a thing - did
they work some ideas out on a keyboard using music theory,
or - more likely given how it drifts from tension to release
to tension following its own strange internal logic - did
they build it up note by note in a sequencer by sheer
instinct?

Someone say something reassuring because I am IMPRESSED and
INTIMIDATED!

electronic musicians are too lazy to do anything on
hardware.

Qrter, you are always very stealthy at avoiding my bullshit
detectors, but it could also be that I'm not that
experienced making electronic music. What exactly do you
mean, are you just being sarcastic or are there actually
programs that can pick out musical notes that will sound
good in progression? (I ask because they now have
synthesizers that can do that sort of thing, though how well
is arguable. see: korg karma).

i dunno, wld be formidable indeed if they did it purely on
instinct.

Noooo, much scarier if they had it planned in their heads
before they did it -

the main bass figure goes Ab, Bb, C, E, F#, G, D, C# - have
no idea if those are supposed to be sharps or flats cause
it's more of a tonal center thing than an actual key they're
in...

i've been pondering about the melodies on spokes. not
exactly straight up music theory or pop-esque music theory
use but they all come off so well, imo. maybe it's the
rhythm of the melodies that seems to make the overall melody
so well.

I'm gonna bump this thread next time Zeus is on - he'll
probably say oh that's an altered diminished whole tone
scale with kidney beans instead of fifths.

yeah, Spokes is real nice... I am so impressed with these
guys melodic sense... also Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boc, etc...
they're all so good... I never could sit down and program a
little melody into a computer program... I'd be better with
a real keyboard that I could fiddle with I think...

and to nacmat, I think RDJ is a great music maker... he has
an amazing sense of melody, I just find some of the
percussion sounds a bit dated is all... I was late getting
into RDJ, so it doesn't have the same nostalgia value for me
as someone here suggested, I think it was ecnadniarb...

"more of a tonal center thing than an actual key they're

haha, what the hell are you talking about monkeybrains? Of
course it has a key

I think he meant that the notes as he listed them there
might not be what they actually are in the key of the
song... you know, cause the note C# is the exact same note
as D flat, but what you call it depends on the key of the
song...

An easy fun way of doing that is with one of these...

By holding down a special key,
It plays a complicated muso melody,

I've got a midi version that's really fun!

Because I am sweet, innocent, naive and trusting, I donno if
you're fucking with me. That looks like an electronic
autoharp. I mean, how is that different from holding down a
random chord with an arpeggiator?

Couple of programs I've been checking out that generate
"random" note sequences you could conceivably use to seed
the musical clouds:

Fractmus

Poodles & Flan

Whaaaat key is it in? It sounds awfully chromatic to me...

I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote it first, then played
it out, then after they decided it sounded great, they set
it up to be perfectly sequenced with the rest of the song.

In this review it talks about it's charm and Eno not going
on a plane without it...

Ah, I get it now - you can play a sequence of chords, pick
out certain notes from the chords on the strumplate, record
the notes to midi... that definitely has potential.

You still need to mess around in your sequencer to get it
how you want it but it's a brilliant start point for trying
different changes you wouldn't normally do sat in front of a
keyboard.

Okay I think I have the main melody phrase figured out - the
first half is in a kind of synthetic harmonic minor mode key
that goes B, C, D#, E, F#, G, A and then it modulates into D
major. Once you get the feel of it under your fingers you
can rip blistering solos over it!!!111
