I might have to reformat? Everytime i start up i get this box that pops up that reads
" Windows File Protection:
Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions
To maintain system stability Windows must restore these original files
Please insert your windows XP Home Edition service pack 1 CD now"
I want this to go away!!! I refuse to reformat because i have far too much data to lose. I also have done this before and i lost all the work i did for 2 cds and i lost over 400+ albums.

the message does not say it will format your disk, only replace missing files.
When you say you have done this before and lost data, do you mean this message has appeared before, you did what it said and lost data?

by the way, when was the last time you visited microsoft's windows update site?
I just did a search for the problem that you are having, some people are having the same problem due to a virus/worm. If this has caused your problem then there is a patch available at MS.

i just cant get up the courage. It is all such a big ploy!
All the work that went into my new album!!! 18 hour days here and there. The time and the dedication. The careful tinkering here and there. Making the same effect 20 different ways and trying each out to see which best fits.
If i fucked up and this reinstalled it would kill my ambitions.

Interesting. I have removed 5 virii.
4 detected by norton. Then norton expired and i left it and got AVG 6.0 which later detected some sort of virus.
Maybe this has to do with it? Could you maybe link me and do you think it could help
*is horrified*

I'd still check the update site, this will NOT cause any data loss and may actually solve the problem :)

When i click cancel it says
"you chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versions?"
then there is that yes and no box.
If i click yes it will be back in like 3-5 minutes. Which interrupts disc burning and cancels it resulting in the disc being trapped in the damn burner forever until i reboot this bitch and take it out

" Windows File Protection:
Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions
To maintain system stability Windows must restore these original files
Please insert your windows XP Home Edition CD ROM now"
then you can press "retry" "more information" and "cancel" ---------------------------------------
When i press cancel it pops up with
"you chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versions?"
yes/no
yes results in it going away for a short time (between 5 seconds and 6-7 minutes)
Hitting no goes back to the same message

ok, i have found this suggestion on the site, to a problem similar to yours.
1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 DISPEX.DLL" (without the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
2. Connect to the Windows Update site and see if the download hangs. (remember to turn the firewall off)

i clicked it a couple of more times and the same green progress bar

after you empty your temporary internet folder then follow these instructions :)
If you need help
1. Close Internet Explorer.
2. Delete files IUCtl.dll and IUEngine.dll from both the system32\dllcache and system32 folders.
3. Delete the registry string value “SelfupdateStatus” present in the
HKLM\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdat e\IUcontrol key.
4. Delete iuenginenew.dll, if it exists.
5. Restart your pc, try the update process again with the firewall off.

OK, so have you searched for and deleted the files mentioned in steps 2 & 4?
When you have...
1. Click Start, Run and type 'regedit' into the run box without the quotes, Run it.
2.You should now see a new window open up with a folder structure on the left.
3. Follow this path on the left...
HKey_Local_machine\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversio n\windowsupdat
e\IUcontrol
let me know when you are in the folder IUcontrol.

that's ok as long as the ones you found are gone only from those two folders!
Do you know about hidden files and folders?
Are you sure that folder is not hidden ?
Check this before moving onto the 3rd step.
