The reason they are coming back is probably because we have
ignored step 1:close your internet browser!!

You will need to close the browser then repeat the process
again.

Before you close your browser, make sure that you have
turned ON 'Show hidden files and folders' and also make
sure that step 3 is carried out in the correct registry
folder!!! If not then bad things will happen!

So before you do all 4 steps on your own is there anything
you need help with?

If not, carry on and restart your pc when done.

3. Follow this path on the left...

HKey_Local_machine\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversio
n\windowsupdat
e\IUcontrol

let me know when you are in the folder IUcontrol.

I am under IUcontrol.

Also that message says to put that CD in. I was thinking if
i do reinstall the operating system would i still have all
my original files?

id print out the instructions before you continue. Each time
you open the internet browser you will need to start again
from step 1.

ALSO ON STEP 3 Only delete 'SelfUpdateStatus' (with the blue
icon )in the right side of the box when you are in IU
control in the REGEDIT box. You don't need to save just
close the box .

If i still had my original files i wouldn't be too
concerned. But if reinstalling the operating system meant
losing my files i wouldn't do it.

We have only done that once but we had to reformat the drive

don't put the cd in. When you are finished with those 4
steps, you should be able to use the windows update site
correctly and that message should go away when the update is
complete, That is my hope anyway.

We are avoiding reinstalling the OS or formatting anything
thios way.

you closed the internet browser and restarted the pc?

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2003-11-24 20:30 [#00964183]
Points: 27325 Status: Lurker

internet browser closed
the files were regenerated so they were deleted

followed step 3

restarted computer

opened internet explorer
tryed to update
same results as before

offline Jazembo from The Earth ball on 2003-11-24 20:34 [#00964185]
Points: 2788 Status: Regular

and you followed step 4 also? (4.Delete iuenginenew.dll, if
it exists. )

so we are still at this stage?...

"Went to the update site.
Clicked update.
It had that green progress bar thing fill up and then it
went to

New Windows Update Software Required

The Windows Update site has been updated. To update your
version of the software and begin using Windows Update,
click Update Now.

i clicked it a couple of more times and the same green
progress bar"

Well at least its no worse off, i'll get back to you when i
find more info, feel free to sleep if you need to!, i don't
think this problem will get any worse and it might take a
while to fix :)

you are probably correct sir

offline Jazembo from The Earth ball on 2003-11-24 20:46 [#00964191]
Points: 2788 Status: Regular

Well we are stuck for now, you cant solve the missing files
problem using windows update because that wont work.

You cant solve it by inserting the cd and doing as it says
becase that doesn't work either.

I am sure that there is a solution that does NOT require you
to format you hard disk.

Reinstalling windows xp will probably do it but there is a
risk that you will loose your data also.

Tyhe only advive that i can offer you for now is to keep
your firewall ON and keep AVG up to date.

old firewall on

You can totally reinstall XP without harming files on the
computer - the only thing you will have to do is reinstall
applications (since the registry gets wiped).

Where were you 3 hours ago man !!! :)

Are you totally sure on this, because there is a lot at risk
if it goes wrong.

If he is 100% sure that you will not loose your data files
then i recomend you reinstall windows xp. This is almost
certain to fix these type of problems. There is just the
hassle of reinstalling everything all over again.

If it does come to this then I strongly recomend the first
thing you do, when you are online again , is to visit the
windows update site and install ALL of the critical update
files.

Then get your firewall and virus scanner running and update
the also.

you are in for a lot of hours work if you do. I wish we
could find an alternative.

If you have a slow internet connection, the windows update
will take a VERY long time.

I need to get some sleep now so ill wish you luck whatever
you do! Cya later... i hope :)

yeh, that's why i didn't want to suggest it to you, because
i don't know for sure. How much stuff have you got that you
would need to backup?

If it is only several GB (5-20) then you might want to
consider buying a small, cheap secondary hard disk. Then you
can transfer all your essentials to this while you reinstall
windows on the primary hard disk.

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2003-11-25 11:08 [#00965055]

it is around 36gb

I am $1285 in debt. Some of that money i owe the bank. So
making any purchase is impossable
