Hmmm, where to begin here. This song by Ed Handley (Balil)
is THE best Acid song I have ever heard. He took the TB-303
to a new level in this track, it's amazing how well it's
done.

I normally don't like the eltist blarg that is
pitchforkmedia, but when the 'Trainer' album was reviewed,
he when on to mention about this song being left out. "As
one skims Trainer's tracklist, two things are missing. One
is a minor omission-- namely "Parasight," recorded for a
Balil EP on Rising High Records, which remains one of the
most emotional and compelling voyages of the Roland TB-303
to this day." I couldn't agree more there, this track takes
the sound to a new level. It's also a tad reminiscent of
Early-Goa, anyway if you haven't already, go listen!!

this track was subsequently featured on a rising high
compilation (can't recall the name off the top of my head)
and was also on warp's artificial intelligence II. should
be pretty easy to locate.

Just all of their CD releases...Bytes, Spanners, Parallel,
and Temple of Transparent Balls.

I usually get around to listening to them every week, great
great stuff. I'd love to get that Balil EP CD release.

i've never met anyone who's heard this except for the person
who gave me a cd rip of the mp3, but has anyone here heard
the 9 minute version of uland (only about 4 minutes), which
was originally called, i believe, "island paradise"?

does anyone know if the track "island" from the parasight ep
is the version from "trainer" or the nine minute version or
a different track altogether?

i guess it's the same 'island' on the trainer promo and on
the parasight ep/cd.

didnt know a 9 min version existed? you're saying there are
9 min versions of both uland and island out there?

offline plaidzebra from so long, xlt on 2003-11-11 15:59 [#00946212]

the track i have is identified as "island praise," but i
have no other info. it is about nine minutes long, and is a
different, longer version of the track called "uland" on
trainer.

i have not heard "island" from the parasight ep so i can't
comment.

there was a track by balil on a cassette mix from nl (i
think) that had a track called "island paradise," but i
haven't heard the mix so aside from the title similarity i
don't know if this track is connected.

balil is indeed excellent.

"otaku" is great. so is flux. and everything else ive heard
by him really. his mix of shambala by as one is really nice,
its actually on the dial p album, "live birmingham 1995".
good stuff.

hehe. well, it says live birmingham 1995 on the cd sleeve,
so its accurate. but its origin is from a remix that balil
did. theres more stuff to the original mix. beginning is
different. its pretty long too, very good.

Yes, "Otaku" is one of my favorite Black Dog tracks!

As for the Island/Uland speculation. I'm not exactly
sure.....I'm listening to "Island" right now which is
7:16....and it's basically a longer cut of Uland. I mean
there very well could be a 9min cut from an obscure release
or a live performance...interesting.

offline disasemble from United States on 2003-11-11 16:14 [#00946229]

uland sounds very differnet to me. almost a remake, but it
definitely has influences of "island". maybe an alternate
version of some sort. i also hear elements of chesh in both
uland and island. melodic structures.

i've temp posted a lowbitrate version of the nine minute
version of "island" (which is identified as "island praise
[final mix of "island" and "the whirling of spirits"]") if
you want to check it out.

it's definitely not the "parasight" or "trainer" version, so
it's either unreleased or is the version "island paradise"
from the cassette mix (which is very obscure apparently).

i posted it to my zebox site so phobiazero could check it
out, obviously it's not my track so it will only be up
temporarily. if anyone wants a cd copy, they can contact
me.

Nice track indeed, I love Ed's work with Balil.

I found the release that featured this song here

The thing is though, did Ed mix the track just for that
release....?

I can only assume...there's only a 150 of those things out
there, and the chance of one showing up on slsk is slim to
nill. I originally misread the label of the song....hmmm
perhaps some engine search on that cassette will shed some
light on track timing.

I just got my hands on two new Balil MP3s (well new in the
sense I never heard them before). Both of the songs can be
found on this release.

Each of the mixes in Unique, Whirling of Spirits is
like a cross between the original and Choke and Fly,
while the Norte Route mix is a lot different from the
original and the one remix I've heard.

If anyone is interested in hearing either of those songs,
let me know I can probably pop on slsk now and again.

mixes.

ah, its good to see a thread about older black dog. nice.

phobiazero, i see you don't have the other version of nort
route in the list you currently have (the version thats on
art4 mentioned in this thread, which is the same version as
can be found on the art ep on R&S). if you need a rip, give
me a call.

speaking of rips; does anybody have a good version of the
older black dog eps?

hi godel. I can say that the mix of nortroute on the ART4CD
is very different from the version on R&S.

The last track of the ART4CD is also a lovely beautifull
mix of "the whirlings of spirits". Also Kirk tracks like
"clinincally inclined" and "Jam packed" blows up my mind!

is it correct that there are 3 different versions of nort
route available?

1. original version on trainer comp., intergalactic beats
comp. and r&s ep.
2. mix on r&s ep
3. mix on art4cd (which is named mix4 for crying out loud)

offline artemis from Ghent (Belgium) on 2003-12-15 10:32 [#00992076]
Points: 667 Status: Lurker

This is 100% correct:
1.original version: ART1 (planet E US version) and
R&S(Belgian version)intergalactic beats comp. and trainer
comp.,
2. Remix: on ART1(ART UK version ) and R&S(Belgian version)
3. mix4: only ART4CD
As you see there are also three different version of ART1.
