Here's something I've been thinking about for a while.

How can you stereotype IDM/drill'n'bass?

Nothing in this genre of music ever seems to repeat itself
very much, if at all. Even if techniques remain the same,
the sounds are always 'enhanced' even if they are not
particularly different (faster, cleaner, bassier what ever).

Okay so I'm babbling, but I was just wondering if you guys
could help me think of some IDM clichés.

The new Squarepusher ''full'' clip is a retread.

There's tons of generic shit IDM, just like there's tons of
generic shit rock and what-have-you.

there are a few.. but the purpose - so to speak - of this
genre, fortunately, is to come up with something new ..
alien / different every time .. so people are always working
towards that goal.. that isn't always the sole purpose
though..

After listening to the briaindance coincidence, µziq and ae
for the first time i was annoyed at how many songs started
out funky then suddenly aquired an ambient tune in the
background, now i dont notice it so much any more.

Beats me... I'm referring to the longer clip, 4 minutes, the
''Go Plastic''-y track.

The 20 second jazzy clip... I think that one is wonderful.

I've always felt that µ-ziq's .. umm mu-sic was incredibly
generic and like by-the-numbers idm .. like there was no
charm to it at all.. just like going through the motions and
copying other artists

that!

I LOVE that bass lick at the arse end of that clip, I want
to hear more. If just one of them is legit... please let it
be that one.

As for µ-Ziq, I dunno... I find his music to be a lot of
fun, and I like his production values and melodies... Royal
Astronomy has a totally unique style to my ears. But I see
where you're coming from, a lot of it seems a bit
deriviative... last of the big names to do the drill and
bass thing, apparently.

I felt the same about µ-Ziq... he didn#t really have much
to offer at first, he still doesn't appeal to me now
either.

What about particular parts of the music itself?... I would
have to say a drill'n'bass beat with a light melody in the
background has been done to death, if you're going to take a
stab at that nowadays you better have some good tricks up
your sleeves to stand out.

enjoy.. but nothing has really grabbed me.. I'm meaning to
give him a fair evaluation eventually though

Using strings at least once on an album.

Using a Rap sample. Two words only.

To have 1 or 2 tracks on an album in a massively different
style to the rest.

I think the cliche/trap that most aspiring idm artists fall
into is that they think the production needs to be all
rapid/confusing and basically drillish .. you know the
afx/squarepusher thing.. not too many people can do that
well and if it's not done that well it's typically damn-near
unlistenable..

so how many more years until the notion of IDM seems dated -
it's already been kicking for over 10 years - and the
evolution of IDM's sound has slowed down quite a bit in the
last four years or so... i mean i don't think the scene will
die out - ever - for every form of music their is a clan
dedicated to preserving it - but i guess that's my question
When does a musical genre stop being innovative and start
becoming recycled?

µ-ziq definitely has his own, special way with melodies. I
can spot his tunes a mile off, that's how much they stand
out as being original.

Bogdan's good. He's got the accordian, high pitched off key
singing and silly beats and stuff. Dirty, lofi, shitty
wicked music.

i think mikey p (u-ziq) had a hand in creating the sound
that we know as idm.

I think its unfair to call is stuff a retread, when much of
his stuff came out before this 'revolutionary' music.

Also, i DO think that their is a stereotype in idm.

I think artists use the same tricks a lot of the time, and
also it seems to me that its almost NECESSARY to use these
tricks.

Tis why i love BOC,,,good melodies, and some rather simple
rap beats.

Typical interview:
Yeah, Bob was running this label so he signed us. I used to
make/modify my own instruments. We didn't really know what
it was so we were just messing around with it, distorting
things at the input stage. I used to run this little synth
through loads of stomp-boxes to get a really nice sound out
of it. I got it for 10 quid when nobody wanted them. Now
they're like a thousand pounds.

"It was mad."
