Why waste money on Technics? There's far better decks out there now.

I don't agree... there may be decks with more features etc, but technics last forever and are so reliable, to me they are like the Marshall stack amp or Gibson Les Paul of turntables... I wouldn't want anything else (still ain't got em either!)

I don't like the pitch waver around 0% on mk2s and mk3s (and more recent models) aren't old enough to be proven as durable yet...

I think in their day they were the top dog and they're still an alright deck. I wouldn't choose a deck on it's abilities to do 50% and backwards stuff. Backwards is a laugh but not really that useful really. Very few tunes would sounds right backwards for starters.
Technics also seem to be riding on their name of late. I mean what the fuck is the point of the MK5's? There's bascially no improvements over the previous models. They've done nothing to the design to improve it in years. I know things shouldn't change for the sake of it but there's little annoyances with them that add up to a whole big annoyance with me. Maybe I'm easily annoyed.

I would prefer a mac laptop but it depends on your budget.

To be honest I don't keep up with the newer models coming out and all that, all I know is I have used technics that are decades old and still work perfectly... the pitch thing at zero can be a pain but I can live with that. When I get some i'll get 2nd hand mk 1s probably.

To be serious I don't use the backwards feature for anything 'cept turntabilism. The tracking does own though.

and sorry to go on (I'll leave it at this for today or I'll not shut up about it ;), but the +-50% is very useful for playing a tune using a single tone on an fx record... again only really useful for turntabilism, +-12% is fine for beatmixing.

Nope! Vestax cost the same as technics (give or take £10). I actually could of got some mark 3s for £50 less (for the pair) than my vestax due to a company discount... they are not cheap substitutes :)
Last time I played out properly I mentioned to the other DJ we'd be using PDX2000s and he was saying it was a shame that they weren't mk3s as they were his favourite. 20 minutes into his set he called me over as I was walking by and said using them had changed his perception of technics entirely. The torque is incredible and when you press stop, they really do stop staight away.

Yep- it's just like any other instrument. Prince prefers Vestax (they made guitars under another name) guitars, whereas Fender are the popular choice.
It's just a shame when people write off a particular sort without ever having used one for any length of time.

The new 15" has ambient light sensors which dim the screen brightness and activate the backlit keyboard in the dark which would be usefull for live gigs.
