Can You Destroy a Laptop?

Can you destroy a laptop by accidentally (and momentarily)
plugging your Sony headphones into the USB port that is to
the immediate left of the headphone port you were blindly
aiming for while watching TV? I'd say naaaahh! But then
again, I haven't been able to turn on the laptop I've had
for less than a week since doing this. Please help.

What were you watching on the tube? If it was a
sitcom....goodluck. I might be able to help you if it was a
cartoon though.

Heheh, I'm not going to try it to find out. But the
headphone port on mine comes out of the front, and I've
tripped over it twice and now the jack practically falls
out! ARRG! stupid design.

don't know about that, but if you drop an imac down a flight
of stairs, the imac breaks, and becomes useless, which isn't
a change from what it was when it was "working".

so just by the employment of common sense we can eliminate
the momentary disruption the USB port felt when it was
violated/penetrated by Sony as the immediate and exact
reason for the computer's inability to properly function or
respond to any external power sources. is he just
traumatized? I tried telling him it doesn't reflect poorly
upon he as a person.. and it in no way affects his
sexuality. it was all an accident, really

You can tell it like it is theo, you licked the USB port cos
you just couldn't get enough of your new toy. It happens,
it's more common than you'd expect.

ha. it was, but it wasn't mine, which made things even
worse. i was trying to lug the box up some stairs and
someone was coming down the stairs, and the box fell, rolled
down the stairs, and the imac was no more. luckily i didn't
have to pay fro the thing. i'm still paying off my
powerbook.

My guess would be that it created an electrical disruption
and shorted something in the computer.

Either that or it's a crap laptop.

maybe this can be answered:

what if this did short my laptop out.. what then? what's the
next step and what will be lost as a result

offline -V- from Ensenada Drive on 2003-10-21 19:19 [#00912895]

I think the only decent thing to do would be for someone to
volunteer to plug their headphones into the USB port of
their laptop and then post the results. Having no laptop, I
can't help here.

It depends on what was shorted out. When you attempt to
turn it on what happens? And have you tried using an
alternate power source (ex. AC instead of battery or
opposite)? If you can't get a light or a whir or anything
out of it then maybe something's wrong with your
powersource. If it comes on and just sits there looking
blank then maybe your motherboard is blown. Anyway, since
it is new, you should still have a warranty, I'd hope, if
you didn't get it second-hand.

nothing happens when I attempt to turn it on.. that's true
for when its adapter is plugged in and when the adapter is
not plugged in. I think I'm fucked. unless all you need is a
new battery or whatever. I can't imagine though, that
something as small as that would cause this to happen

man, what's litestep like these days?

i've gone back to using windowsxp - normally i use lunix,
but support for my new pc is fucking awful, it runs like a
bag of shit.

wouldn't mind using an alternative shell, but i remember a
year or go when i tried, they were all godawful slow.
