Shit loads of classical music. They also bought me those 'Anne Raclin' tapes which have a particular piece of classical music and Anne tells the story attached to it. I still have them in the attic somewhere. Also a fair amount of Jazz both instrumental and sung. We have a rather large record collection passed down from previous generations.

my parents were divorced, so in my dad's house/car he played peter gabriel, dark side of the moon, prince, twin peaks, alot of classical. He lived in an A-frame out in the woods-it was badass. He had some nice speakers and would play "lets go crazy" by prince and alot of the police.
My mom's side has 3 generations of drummers (including my older brother) so they like alot of jazz, blues, and rock.

Father: Classic rock, some blues, and jazz. Moreso classic rock then, than now. Now that he's getting older, he's settling into jazz and actually some stuff the I've lent him (Phoenecia, Tortoise, some stuff out of my personal jazz coll.)
Mother: She has always liked Fleetwood Mac, other than that, I'm not too sure about what she listened to when I was a kid. Now she likes "relaxing" music, and really awful christian music.
Oh, they both liked Queen back then, so that was great, being turned onto them at an early age.

Music I didn't ilke.
My dad played a lot of jazz and blues. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and a bunch of others I can't remember. He also had a bunch of records from the 60s and 70s, including a lot of pink floyd, but he never played those. He also played a lot of classical
My mom never played much music. She liked old love songs, like from the 50s.

no music, which gave me a clean slate to work with. that's why i discovered and got into so many different types of music, i wasn't predisposed to anything. i got into rock because the white kids i was friends with were starting to get into it. i got into hip-hop because the black kids i knew loved it (well the stuff they heard on the radio or from their older brother anyway). i got into techno because of hearing it in movies and thinking it sounded cool. no one ever told me it sucked so i didn't have any prejudice coming into it. and because i liked many different types of music at a young age (12) i latched onto more academic/scholarly music because music interested me and i enjoy anything that's creative and unique. now i listen to basically every type of music. so that's my story. the moral is to not instill any one kind of music on your kids if and when you have them..

my dad listened to mainly oldies - beatles, led zeppelin, deep purple and such - but he also listened to country but really old and really new (no johnny cash though) he instead listened to this guy named Gary Stewart that always sung with the grace of a dying dog - and my dad always cranked it to full volume.
my mom listened to pretty much everything - that's probably where i got my taste from. my sister had good taste in music, listening to The Cure and Nirvana mainly, with some Toadies and Blind Melon and occasionally some Guns N' Roses (Use your illusion).
My stepmom listened to 80s tunes like the Cars and Guns n' Roses, and she also listened to country. Ick.

i played my own music when i was a kid. i was fortunate enough to have my own record player and loads of records from the age of about 5. when i was older (about 8 or 9) id get a record every week if i didnt fuck around whilst going shopping. its amazing how bribery can work so well :)
apparently some of my favourites were
hung on you by the righteuos brothers bullmoose by bobby darin teen beat by sandy nelson rocking goose by johnny & the hurricanes on the rebound by floyd cramer the frightened city by the shadows tales of braye ulysees by cream the sun goes down by dave dee dozy beaky mick & tich reflections from the looking glass by 1910 fruitgum company
ie mostly b-sides, mostly old 60s instrumentals or mostly whacked out shit. so not much has changed really.
unfortunately when you're 5 years old the concept of looking after vinyl has little or no grasp so i've spent a fortune trying to replace these now rather difficult to find records but they sound as good as they ever did.

My mom listened to Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, New Order, The Clash, Billy Idol (blech), Pink Floyd, the standard issue classic rock (and not to classic because some of it would have been contemporary at the time) rebellious teens get into. But like I said before in a similar topic, she's really lost her passion for music now, she likes... anything but loves nothing.
