do idm-records sell good ?

i heard once, that only about 300 copies of the "criminal"
series on planet-mu were sold.
how about, venetian snares records ? how many records have
been sold ?
or aphex ? how many people bought drukqs or any album.

i wanted to make a thread were we could gather such numbers.

It really depends on who it is and how much they appeal to
music lovers.

??????????

i saw a stat a while back that stated that 200'000 units of
drukqs had been sold .. in terms of sales, that is probably
the 'dark side of the moon' of idm. a huge exception ..
probably largely thanks to radiohead name dropping "aphex"
and his "windowlicker" fame ??

I doubt most of "idm" sells more than 10000 units ... let
alone 5000.

there's some posts that had some interesting stats about all
this

i'm just curious. how much drukqs have been sold ? 300 ?
3000 ?

or witboas !

200000 !!! wow, but 5000 also seem quite impresing.

i mean if I could sell 500 records of my music i would be in
heaven. and we have to remember that idm still isn't THAT
famous.

I was probably being a bit generous [?] 5000 is probably
like platinum in idm actually ..

There's too many artists/releases these days [good and bad]
so its hard to stick out one's neck now - unless you're one
of "the big names" .. aphex, ae, boc, maybe plaid .. pusher,
µ-ziq etc. vibert would get the mowax audience as well i
guess? noo idea i'm just talking out of my arse now ,,..

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-10-15 06:48 [#00902732]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

re: you selling 500 ... i haven't heard your stuff - but to
sort of put it in perspective?

most m3rck releases have 1000 copies pressed, and i think
only Machine Drums' "Now You Know" has been re-pressed ..
And if you've heard any stuff off M3rck .. that means there
some fuckin lush as music not selling more than 1000 units!

But then a lot seems about branding/getting your name out
there .. fucknose

Yeah, Vinert has the advantage that all the mowax/ninja
tunes fans get his stuff. I know a few people into that sort
of stuff who've never heard of Aphex etc. but who love
vibert. N.O.W. have a similair sort of appeal to fans of
those labels...

korben: I wish I could talk my ass off that well (lose some
weight at the same time...)

Not that one should blame the artists, but part of the
reason IDM doesn't sell well (this is my hypothesising) is
that, as electronica, any bloody record shop charges more
for it.

offline Jaysuz Jones from Wasaga Beach (Canada) on 2003-10-15 06:53 [#00902736]

Also, the very fact that it's [the genre] often referred to
as 'IDM' will always sound ridiculously pretentious.

offline Jaysuz Jones from Wasaga Beach (Canada) on 2003-10-15 06:56 [#00902739]
Points: 888 Status: Addict

That, and the essence of the genre (remember the classic
Artificial Intelligence cover ?) is 70's progressive rock
applied to late 80's and 90's dance aesthetics.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-10-15 06:57 [#00902740]

dunno enough about business .. but it seems a bit of a
supply demand issue.

i remember when "mhtrtc" used to be ca. 50 nz dollars [a
fuckin rip], after the whole radiohead kid-a thing etc. and
with the release of geogaddi cd stores now stock it for the
regular price of 35 ... dunno who is to blame?

Vibert's a clever chap: he spreads it around .. loads of
releases on other labels, he's got some releases on Ninja
Tunes as well if i'm not mistaken?

I SAY, Warp, SKAM, Rephlex, Mego et al. should try marketing
to perpetual stoners, the Peter Gabriel - era Genesis
jetset, hipsters (sometimes, ya know, they DO get it right),
and people my parent's age trying to learn how to 'dance
modernly'.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-10-15 07:00 [#00902744]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

re: the "idm" thing .. i haven't actually seen any store
label their music under this genre? and i don't think the
pretentious aspect stops 'people' [ie. the masses]. just
look at "intelligent drum n bass": LTJ Bukem and the Earth
series i think sells pretty well considering - its got lush
packaging and fully goes for that retro swank thing.

Yeah, I reckon vibert does a lot better out of his music
than some people we'd consider more famours among the IDM
acts...

He has released on Nothing Records, Mo Wax, Ninja Tunes etc.
as well as IDM labels. Not to mention things like him
remixing Moloko - Lotus Eater... that's a very popular ibaza
chill out type track. Features on compilations/mix cds
galore.

'drums n' bass' was STILL IN THE NAME, giving people an idea
as to what the album's vibe is.

With IDM, one doesn't know how 'intelligent' or danceable it
will be.

Even if you're an amateur musicologist, you'll still
struggle to figure out how ambient or abrasive the record's
gonna be.

offline Skink from A cesspool in eden on 2003-10-15 07:08 [#00902761]

I still think idm is a really crappy genre name.

But i think that 5000 sales is good as long as it pays the
bills that's all that matters.

Plus i think more people earn from doing gigs.

I think it was pressed as 500 to start with. As they've done
a re-pressing I assume that it's sold over 500. I could be
wrong though. Check planet-mu.com. Might have something
htere.

I think criminal was repressed due ot the original run
selling out though...

Jaysuz Jones: Even if people hear only musipal and really
like it, they'll get online and find out his other aliases,
then buy them (whatever label they're on). I expect some
ninja tunes fans will be buying Yoseph despite it being a
warp album.

Jaysuz: yeah .. marketing the image type thing definitely is
part of it .. so could well be that idm is off-putting, or
just foreign to most people.

Ceri: yeah for sure .. Vibert has some funky grooves and
what not, but yeah .. doesn't get talked about so much here

I think SKAM stuff could go down real well with the sort of
skate/xtreme sport culture, that seems to be dominated by
punk? But then that wouldn't work on so many other levels ..
so many forces at play ;)

Jebus, don't get me started on SKAM.

Is their website still an indicipherable (sp?) mess ?

When is Gescom gonna get re - released ?

Why the FUCK isn't Bola inside 2 out of every 3 hipsters
decks ?

What 'image' ? Some of these cats are like the KLF (in it
for the fame & dough) or Pearl Jam (making music for cash
but trying not to be famous).

'IDM' will ALWAYS be an underground movement for these
reasons; I think more skaterpunks would dig tigerbeat6.

I wonder how Cex's most recent rap efforts have gone down ?

true, problem with a lot of idm stuff though is that its in
that uncomfortable zone between underground and sort of
above ground -

but as skink sais - if 5000 items sold pays the bills then
its ok.

Yes, I think the skam website sucks. I know most music
listeners have speakers on their pc, but try navigating it
in work (if you don't have speakers). Sure, once you are
familair with it, it's not a problem, but it is far too
unfriendly. If I want to buy a record, I just want to hand
over my details and get it in the post, not spend quarter of
an hour messing around with a highly abstracted navigation
system with a hard to understand voice when I am fortunate
enough to be on a pc with speakers. It's a record label, not
a challenge annaka style puzzle :)

I guess Skam could have sold more if they wanted to. But
isn't the limited release one of their "things"? Global
Goons last release sold 7 000 and Music has the right has
passed 100 000, so I guess there is only a few artist who
can make a lot of money.

this is all speculation and those figures are meaningless as
they take nothing into account they-re just some numbers
...

electronic music sells really badly.
maybe its because of dedicated electronic music sites that
give away music for $5 a month or whatever like soulseek.

loads of people download stuff from there for free without
thinking of the effects it has on labels and artists..
it's also pretty specialist and the events and promoters
aren't often there to give it some promotion in a live way
....
