I watched The Thing again the other night. It's like the
30th time I've seen it, and it was just as good, if not
better. I salute the man Carpenter. And I STILL need to see
Dark Star! (and find my copy of In The Mouth Of Madness)

They Live is his best work. The matrix ripped it off
entirely.

damn i LOVE 'the thing' it never disappoints despite seeing
it 20+ times. funny thing is, i own the DVD, and yet
everytime it's on TV i find myself watching it.....AGAIN!

Evil Q - d00d 'the thing from another world' suXorZ IMO, i
sold the DVD the day after i watched it =/. i really
expected a lot more, and i marveled at how John Carpenter
was inspired to make his movie, after watching the
original.

They Live made me laugh, more than it scared me.

Never seen Dark Star, but i have a feeling a rental is in
the near future!

Carpenter said he didn't base his film on the original -
which he never intended to remake, just 're-imagine' - but
on the short story that inspired the original, called
'Who Goes There?'. You can read it online at the unofficial
Thing website here :)

The novelisation of The Thing is supposed to be pretty cool
too, though long out of print.

well, essentially, the original Thing really scared me and
the remake kind of bored me.

the special effects are nicely disgusting, but scary? no.

The Thing (Carpenter) is one of my all-time favorites too.
It's the only movie that has ever scared me. I saw it when
I was 9, and couldn't sleep for weeks without the light on.
I had already seen Alien, Excorcist, etc but for some
reason, only the Thing scared me.

The DVD is great, with a commentary by Carpenter and Kurt
Russell that is well worth watching, actually very funny.

Assault On Precinct 13 is his masterpiece IMO. One of his
few non-horror non-sci fi films. And with some of the most
wooden acting this side of Steven Seagal!

abOOt how many DVD's do you have?

do you think the theatrical release of Alien will have
scenes that we haven't seen before. consensus seems to
suggest that perhaps it's stuff thats been seen on the DVD?
the deleted scenes?

i can hardly wait to FINALLY see it on the BIG screen......i
think it's released next month!

it will probably be the deleted scenes, yes.

but maybe they've cleaned up the cocoon scenes - that would
be good.

I have about 110 dvd's or something. I buy around 7 to 10
new ones a month.. : s

Alien: Director's Cut is shorter and has the cocoon scene in
it's enterity - so obviously the pacing has been improved
and the endless shots of the spaceship cut down a tad.

$6 wasn't next to nothing; that's almost 50% of what you
paid for it, isn't it? but it would've been nice to give it
to qrter..

qrter i can't believe you liked the original so much, but
i'm glad..

my favorite carpenter movies are escape from NY, big trouble
in little china, and the thing

well the best Carpenter is ofcourse.. Dark Star.

it is VERY funny and quite moving too. intelligent film.

Escape to New York is one of the coolest films - who cares
it's dumb in places - it has GODDAMN Snake Plisskin!

Assault is good too - quite brutal.

Halloween is a classic. the thing that I always forget about
Halloween (and immediately am remembered of when watching
it) is how great the visuals are.
and truely scary.

They Live is a classic - it starts so slow, but the timing
is great. early on you know something is quite wrong, but it
takes forever (in a good way) to get there.

after that he seems to kind of slip, although I did like
Escape from LA - good ol' Bruce Campbell..

blarrrrrr

i just saw Ghost Of Mars over the weekend and i have to say
it SuXorZ!

the best part about the film was Ice Cube and the
Anthrax/Buckethead score! what a pile O crap.....IMO

one thing tho....the DVD stated that John Carpenter - and i
quote - "has scored ALL 23 of his movies."

but thats not true......big mistake on the DVD? or what ???

this movie scared the SHIT out of me when i first saw it (i

after that.

saw the special EDITION of THE FOG a couple days
ago.......it was good, but unfortunately NOT as scary as i'd
hoped.

i really enjoyed the new Documentary on the DVD where JC
talked about the problems he encountered making The Fog and
how they had to add some stuff to try to make it MORE
scary....NOT!

I had to turn Ghosts Of Mars off after 25 minutes. It was
mind-bogglingly awful. I have They Live and Prince Of
Darkness on DVD now, give em a tanning this Sunday methinks
(commentaries on each, bliss!).

The Fog I've never seen but I heard it was a bit pants.
Isn't it based on a James Herbert book? If so that'd be why,
that guy sucks.

Ah So... I appreciate John Carpenter very much so indeed,
"In The Mouth Of Madness" is indeed a stunner, and who can
forget "Escape from New York"...there will be no Blade
Runner, No Mad Max, and conversly no Terminator, no Matrix
no credible post apocalyptic cyber punkish landscape without
it as a precedent.

flea insisted that I watch Assault on Precinct 13, I was
genuinely shocked at this film, well ahead of its time.

Vampires is the closest thing to Kathyrine Bigalow's Near
Dark, [imo one the ultimate vampire flicks] The Thing is
next on the list of wants.

I've loved Carpenter films for many years -- he has so many
classics... I think I've said this before, but sometimes his
execution fails his ideas, which is a shame. But his ideas
are real dope, and so is he -- he looks like some backwater
hick :D

I finally watched 'They Live' last night - loved it, despite
the suspect editorial choices/acting skills. This is a
director who should not be ignored! A real case of "Hunt
everything down to get the full picture" kind of deal.
Commentary tomorrow, then on with the rest of his shit!
(Aside from Ghosts Of Mars, man alive that sucks!)

when he finally puts on the glasses and has a look at the
'real' world - no music, just the sounds of the street.

pretty incredible scene - moreso because I knew nothing
about this film when I watched it, so I didn't see any of it
coming. :)

For me, having never seen it before yesterday, it straddled
a fine line between being eerie and lacklustre. One problem
is a Stephen King story called 'The Ten O' Clock People' -
which bears a remarkable resemblence to this film, based on
a short story called 'Eight O' Clock in the Morning' (forget
the author's name). Honestly, it's quite remarkable some of
the similarities. I'd read that first and it was inevitavble
I'd be reminded of it while watching.

Anyway, William may have a slight point, does kinda give the
Matrix a bunk up.

i was looking for a description of the special
features.....here they are!!!

SUPPLEMENTS: The 2 disc set features 2 commentary tracks
(one thoroughly entertaining track with director John
Carpenter and Kurt Russell, a previously recorded commentary
where the two chatter away like old friends -- "By the way,
both of our ex-wives are in the movie" -- and a new track by
producer Debra Hill and production designer Joe Alves) on
disc 1. Disc 2 features the complete 10 minute robbery
sequence that Carpenter cut from the film (it was meant to
be the opening scene and has only been seen in brief clips)
with optional commentary by Carpenter and Russell, the
documentary Return to Escape From New York, an interactive
featurette on the making of the "John Carpenter's Snake
Plissken Chronicles" comic book, a still gallery, a trailer
montage, the original teasers and trailer, and an
accompanying special edition of the first issue of the
"Snake Plissken Chronicles" comic book. <<--THIS IS SOO
BEAUTIFUL. full color, etc....WOW
