i think Reason is predominantly for german anoraked trance
geeks.

I use redrum. thats it.

Subtractor sounds like a washing
machine.

I only use Reason to make drum samples. Looks like too much
fiddling about to me. And the sound design aspect is
limited. But it's an excellent program and the preset sounds
are great.

to be honest - all my tracks are made only on reason , the
only part not from reason are samples -

i use 2.0 now...dont know much about 2.5 though it sounds
basically the same. i like it for drums just the way its set
up but i dont like how its so limited to premade drum kits.
maybe there's a way around that i dont know.

its not limited - you can use Recycle to change DrRex drums
, and you can change almost everything on redrum pattern -
soma part on redrum , some on line in the bottom of screen

I find Reason to be counterproductive. It may have a lovely
fancy dazzling interface but it ultimatly just gets in the
damn way, and doesn't provide enough methods of making (and
breaking) sounds to fuel my creativity. Moan moan moan etc,
kudos if you can get it to make the music you want though,
that's all that really matters in the end.

its funny coz i always thought that the more creativity you
have inside - the less you need to show it ....
...nothing personal , maybe im not so creative like you
whats the point of buying hole cake when you want to eat
just a slice ?

It's good for looped based stuff. It's no good for drill
stuff but if you aren't into that and you can do without
many effects in your tracks then it is a good package.

I like how almost everything is automatable, although it can
get quite messy

Yeah I mean, you don't have to use the redrum interface to
make beats, you can click the edit button while having the
redrum track ativated, and it functions just like a piano
roll.

Personally I've stretched the malstrom and subtractor to
it's limits.
I'm aware of all the sounds you can get, but if you really
want to get rid of the 'reason sound', you need to start
using the samplers.

And since I'm not really worried about that, it just fits me
very well right now.
It's so easy, and I totally disagree with another poster
that it gets in the way and doesn't fuel creativity, I mean
that program has done more for me than any other.

I think that if you have imagination you can do anything you
want, i have discovered many interesting things you can do
with it.

As i said your imagination is the only limiting factor : )

i use acid pro mostly because it's a program i fully
understand and i don't want to try to learn new software or
buy a new computer just yet.

Reason is alright, although everything made with reason
sounds like its made on reason, the drum interface and
automation interfaces are ass, and it doesn't have VST
support.

"although everything made with reason
sounds like its made on reason"
,
Wouldn't that be due to the fact that your letting the
software influence the end result too much, not the other
way around?

I'm not saying you can't make it but it is a lot more
tedious and a lot more work than using other packages.

Perhaps, but most experienced producers I have talked to,
including myself (although not as experienced as I would
like) seem to agree on the same thing. You can still make
amazing stuff with reason (I never said it was a bad
program).

Funny. My computer setup is so shit poor, I always thought I
was close to bringing it well past its sonic potential. Not
that I am amazing or anything like that, but I have a really
shitty computer set up.

No doubt at all Taxidermist,

I totally agree with you, my experiences have told me that
the more you know about the software that your on, the more
unique and creative you can be (less likely to run the
software at it's default (demolike) settings)
... so maybe it could have something to do with the
interface? What does everyone else think too? Do you think
that the interface you work with influences song structure,
composition or timing of what comes out your speakers?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2003-09-17 00:05 [#00866404]

I have found that the more intuitive and comfortable an
interface is, the more dynamic my music sounds, as far as
song structure is concerned. Also, software developers have
a tenancy to make shit hot software look shit hot. So a lot
of the time if something looks cool, there is a reason for
that. A prime example of this is the good folks at native
instruments. It looks beautifully set up and futuristic, and
it sounds amazing.

It seems to me that reason just has a very polished, yet...
I donno. Its hard to describe. A lot of software like reason
and fruity loops is designed so that a novice can get near
professional sound quality, but its not professional
sounding. Its fruity loops and reason sounding. Thats the
best way I can describe it.

Just so I don't piss anyone off, one of my main pieces of
software is fruityloops, so don't trip. I love it, you just
need to master everying elsewhere.

late.

Nah, you can't tell a Reason track that easily...it is
impossible because if you use Dr.Rex and Malstrom you can
pretty much create any sound you want.

The only areas for me that Reason falls down in are that
there still aren't enough effects modules and the sequencer
could do with a few improvements, on the flip side, even
though I don't use it any more, I have never used a more
solid music production platform. Reason didn't crash on me
once...no matter how much I fiddled with wiring in the back
etc. If they could maintain the stability, improve the
sequencer a bit and allow VST effect plugins to be used I
would go back to it like a shot.

well thats right , but yoiu must remember that many of
people here knows something about vst plugins and such - for
many reason is reason , fl is fl and they dont need any
others plugins - ask on board - i doubt that there will be
more than 30-40% of people who really knows about plugins ,
midi , vst and such....
