I don't know he has done a pretty good job. This is some of the best beat programming I've heard on this board in a while. I agree the sounds over the top could be better. But he has done a very good job. This is funky but needs better notes definitely. This is definitely some of the best shit I've heard from a board member for a long time. 10 out of 10 on beat programming alone. Well thought out beatz nice job.

nobsmuggler,
Been done before. Most people no offence to them can do beatz for shit. They sound unfunky and quite frankly there are very few people who can really beat program. Japes has definitely got skills when it comes to beat programming.

Nicely chaotic, but replace the synths definately.
With drum'n'bass/drill'n'bass/kill'n'bass music I want my ass kicked in most cases (unless you're some kinda professional and can manage juggling fast beats with melody), not let off with some pansy crap (not that your effort is crap, just unsatisfactory).

Superb beat programming...it has a real energy about it. Needs a nasty bass line though to go with it. I notice it is the Trace Amen you have used, I think you could do with his style of bass as well :D

People have got hype about some pretty mediocre stuff on the Board in the past. This is the first thing that has really impressed me for while. But agreed a nasty ass bass would just top it off.

calm down darlin just me thoughts i never said it was no good in fact i said it is good but needs more its that simple
if you listen to any artist who creates good beats eg aphex there is plenty of melody as well
and the lists of artists who have used the amen esq beat is massive i wouldnt know where to start

I think if you are an old drum and bass head you ride on the agression and energy of the beats, because at the end of the day that was what the music was all about. I can see how, if you don't come from that background the track might sound a little sparse.

i think the track is a little dry. it's kinda sterile. i'm not really into straight beat programming so it doesn't really do it for me. the sequencing is good, it deffinately sounds like you were very meticulous about the beat arrangement, but ultimately i don't sense any soul in this piece. i think if it had some more melodic colorful layers i would like it more but that's just personal preference.
thanks for sharing though.

Cheers dudes (esp. Promo).
There's some stuff on www.zebox.com/japes I did from a while ago, and I've got a CD available to buy from Norman Records. My site is http://klatch.co.uk. You can find some info there. I will chuck more tunes up at later dates.
Oh and Shitmat's working on some remixes of my stuff, hopefully for release on Mu.

The synths are actually me trying to play my Dad's old jazz clarinet. It's apparently more than 100 years old.
Cheers for the advice though. I'll try chucking a nasty Dillinja style bassline in there.

Having heard it a few times now I think it works fine. Definitely a nasty bass would make it cooler but I don't mind it the way it is either. Its a fairly complete track in itself and thats good because so often people just put up little bits of track without much structure which gets boring.

i'm not a fan of this sort of breakbeat cutup (with some exceptions) but technically it works pretty well. i'd like to hear more of that clarinet, and more elaboration on the melodic elements. maybe a little too much like a genre exercise at this point, but if you like the style, well done.
