hmmmm... doesnt this name make you think? has aphex become popular enough for names like this to pop up? do you think we'll start seeing more and more people in yahoo chat rooms with names like "ae dood" or "1D|\/| C|-|ic|<" ? im not trying to be an arsehole by saying thats a bad thing or that they dont have the right to enjoy good music - but has it become popular to be in the idm crowd?
i know many people that will do anything to be "differant" or original - by adopting styles or tastes that are just eclectic without actually embracing them or understanding them.
do any of you feel that the same thing may happen with idm soon? that experimental electronic music will become the new pop culture phenomenon like goth or emo has recently become?

She might be a member of this messageboard as well. I for example, am a member of some other -non-idm-related messageboards, and I do have the 7\ logo as my avatar over there.
Does that mean I am making idm something mainstream?
It is almost a law that everything underground becomes mainstream one day , so, yes, it will happen.

off course, everything is relative. and maybe we won't even notice.
I'll give an example: A few weeks ago, I heard windowlicker on the radio, at 8 in the evening.
That would not have been possible ,ten or twienty years ago.
We first needed the newbeat and then we needed Laurent Garnier or dj Hell or Peel sessions , soundtracks, etc...
it's all about pushing borders and I wouldn't be surprised if they are pushed our(idm's) way.
There already IS a lot of idm in commercials etc... so people hear it every day.
I think it's only a matter of time, before people are getting used to it and can really start appreciating it.
dunno.. just a philosophy.

Aphex has been sort of borderline mainstream for the last decade though!
You hear MTV hosts drop his name from time to time, and when he was nominated for best male or something in some big pop awards thing a while ago!?!
There's certainly a lot of false people out there who drop his name to sound interesting/intellectual in some way.
RJ's always been a master of managing his own popularity - Smojface was obviously released to piss off the large "indie kid" following he could have got after releasing something as accessible as 26 Mixes (mentioned that on here before, pretty sure I'm right about it too).
I don't think he'll ever let himself get mainstream or start having 16 year old girls start AFX fan clubs - He'll just start playing sandpaper and food processors at his live shows again! Maybe just loud white noise and try to give them all hearing damage.

theres names much more boring than afx gurl or whatever it is. I see what people are saying, but just look on irc and on IDM channels you've got hundreds of cretins called rdj rdj2 rdj3,etc. even people on this mb could be accused of lack of name imagination, myself included.the problem is that everyone wishes they thought up the afx alias cos it sounds/looks so damn cool.i agree the whole aphex twin thing is too popular for its own good, think of the dnb scene which was great a few years ago, but as it goes mainstream it sounds crap, whatever happened to techstep, darkstep, rollers, jungle. its just dnb now. even stuff which is more like pop music with a highhat tapping at 160bpm is now dnb, and thats what aphex will be, in hmv theyve got 5 or 6 aphex twin cds, even the new aphex twin "help aphex twin v/vm cd" :) no wonder someone has afx in their name, its going too mainstream imo. im not against getting more people into afx/idm and stuff but hmv has 2 squarepusher cds, 1 boc and 2 ae and thats it, it just seems a little like oh er idm dance music that'll be the aphex twin then. when hmv has some rephlex stuff and not just warp, then ill be happy, oh and if it stocks gybe:) I can't remember the point I was trying to make, so l'll shut up now!

Aphex sells LOTS of records, therefore he is popular.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BE HAPPY THAT GOOD MUSIC SELLS!!!!
It's really hard to make a living as a musician and the fact that AFX is not starving or working a day job is because his shit sells. You, his obsessed fans should be THRILLED by this. It means your idol can live comfortably and not have to worry about how is music is percieved or if he's going to be able to pay his rent if he makes something 'wierd' (like noise). Be happy that AFX has become financially independent because of his music, it's a success that most artists don't have.

man, everything is mainstream. Ever since it got "cool" to be "weird" and "mentally ill" (unless, of course you actually become "weird" in which case everyone tells you to stop taking drugs) people have been trying to get further underground.
But when EVERYONE tries to be underground at the same time, then the underground itself becomes pop.
It happens. If you care then chances are you were only in it for the image in the first place.

well said.
I always say the emo (rock/alt of today) suck JUST because of the scene. Everyone is into screamo and punk and whatever for the scene.
They think it's the anti-pop.
I think the scene intself ruins music. Let the commerically produced people sell their shit on MTV, but just listen to the good music, don't make an image out of it.
