If you bid early, you're just out-bidding yourself!

At the end of the day, he bid more than you, whether it was
last minute or not. Your maximum bid was not enough, so you
can't really complain. Although I agree it's a pisser when
you think you have it won with 5 seconds to go, and then
when you reload the screen you find out you've lost. That's
life...

Hell yes I'm a last minute bidder. You've got to adjust
your game if you want to play, friend. Think about it, no
one has bid, the item is still at $3, you bid your max, and
if you want it bad enough, you get it. Stop outbidding
yourself!

Yes, sometimes it is not possible to bid in the last minute.
Simply, when the auction
closes in the middle of the night or when i'm working.

Well, then what is the diference whether someone bids 1
second after you've gone to bed or one second before the
close of the auction.
Early bidders piss me off. Sorry.

Ok, atgmartin, i will outbid you the last second. What's you

i think late bidders are sissies. an early bidder doesn't
care if they get out bid cuz when they out bid you, you'll
stop bidding cuz you think its dumb to out bid urself. they
don't have to worry about last minute shit, if you really
stand behind what you say.

I think ebay could really benefit from "fuzzy" time
indications. Rather than giving precise times left, maybe it
should be accurate only to within two hours. It could say
things like "This auction will end in between 2 and 4 hours
time" etc.

Aww come on, there's nothing quite like sniping a bid on an
item. Hey, it's been done to me too, and I've done it many
times. Scenerio 1: You want an item. It's 3 bucks.
Someone else wants the item. Someone bids $4 three days
before the auction ends. A bidding war ensues, the item
gets up to $12 with a bid from the first bidder. Bidder 2
backs out. Bidder 1 gets item. Scenario 2. Both bidders
wait until the last minute. Bidder 1 bids $10. Bidder 2
bids $5. Bidder 1 wins item for $5.05. You see? This way,
whoever wants it more wins based on their max bid. One
chance, one shot one kill, like Unreal Tournament Instagib.

You are in right, atgmartin. But today i was outbid on a
lovely item and i feel soo shit! But that the game. Last
minute bidding it is very boring. A last minute bidder has
always watch the auction.
Scenerio 1: You have plans for last minute bidding on 11
p.m. On 10 p.m friends visited your appartement and ask you
to go out and party. The last minute bidder says: "no, i
have to outbid". Boring, you will lose your friends!
Scenerio 1: You have plans for last minute bidding on 11
p.m. On 10 p.m friends visited your appartement and ask you
to go out. The last minute bidder changes his mind and go to
party with friends. Which scenario do you prefer?

ebay is for retards, they make stores now that you can buy
stuff

well I've been in that situation. I've been known to place
a bid a bit early (maybe an hour) in these situations. If
it's an item I really want, I'll stay home and get it and
meet them later. Fortunately, I hate most people in this
town so I rarely go out.
BTW, what item was it?

When you bid the last 5 seconds before closing and you see
that your bid is to low, it feels like shit!

offline atgmartin from DeathMallMegaComplexville (United States) on 2003-08-20 08:49 [#00829559]

Yeah, shit happens, but you put your limit. If someone else
wants it more/has more money to burn, they'll get it,
whether you have a bidding war or wait until the last
minute. BUT, if you wait until the last minute, maybe this
person has a bid, maybe fairly low because he thinks no one
else wants it, then you snipe it from him for peanuts at the
last few seconds. You fuckin win, man! Example, I sniped
the Scorn Ellipsis box set for 22 euros. Here is a typical
set when there is a bidding war: linky to ebay

second bidding!

Sure, try it out, but get to know how fast your connection
refreshes, so you know what time at the latest you need to
bid. Also, don't get caught with 20 seconds left and you
haven't signed in :)

offline artemis from Ghent (Belgium) on 2003-08-20 09:06 [#00829572]

I have the fastest connection on my office, hope my boss
don't get in my office. In a browser i refresh constant to
see the time left before closing. In another browser i have
already signed in, the only thing i have to do is push the
button "bid now". Is this how it works?

offline atgmartin from DeathMallMegaComplexville (United States) on 2003-08-20 09:34 [#00829597]

Yes, sign in. If you press My Ebay, it asks for your sign
in, but that only signs you into My Ebay, not bidding. Give
yourself 20-30 seconds. You'll usually get the item. Unless
someone has a higher bid. This really avoids premature
bidding wars and the item ends up less expensive. (Of
course, other idiots may have their own bidding wars going.)

Early bidders annoy me. Because I know I'm going to bid at
10 seconds, so all they're doing is upping the price.
Especially when there are seven bids and eight days to go.
Do they think bidding that early is securing them a place?
Really? Even if you enter your very highest amount, say
"well, I can't afford to outbid myself, so I'll just place
it and leave it to it", you've got far more chance of
winning if you give people five minutes to outbid you rather
than five days.
I dunno. It just seemed very, very... stupid, to me, with no
offence intended to anyone who does it. Obviously if you
can't attend the auction end, then fair enough, but
otherwise... I just don't understand.
