My sound is disabled. My sound programs won't work because Windows says there isn't a device - when I KNOW there is a device to do so. My sound card has given me no warning signs of self-destruction, which is why this concerns me. I was mixing two very high-quality sound files together - i saved both luckily - and while was once was playing just fine, I closed the other file I no longer needed, and my comp froze. I restarted of course, let Scandisk run and my sound was GONE. I've tried re-installing drivers, searching for drivers, hardware and devices, but NOTHING IS WORKING.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sound card is a Crystal WM Audio card.

MinME sucks ass, I can't say I have ever had this happen before but I will try to help.
If you go to My computer, Controll Panel,
Open up device manager, look for the faulty sound device. Right click it (there maybe more than one, if so do the same for all) and choose Uninsatall or delete or remove (i cant remember what ME calls it)
The turn off your pc, unplug it and take out the soundcard.
Then reboot your pc without the sound card.
Then shut down the pc, and unplug.
Reinsert the sound card, reboot the pc and reinstall the drivers.
Then try shutting down and rebooting one more time with the soundcard inside.

well go to, uh, ... like, uh, "my computer", "windows" or something and like "control panel" or something like that, ooh ooh, I know go to the start menu and search for "banana", no wait search for "volume". That might work. But probably not.

Only do this if your are comfortable taking apart your pc and if you have the installation software for the soundcard. This is not guarenteed to work, but it cant make it any worse than it already is right!

then try my earlier advice, if it does not work after this then your sound card is probably screwed, maybe due to an electrical surge, or maybe your music was just too damn good for it to handle :) , these things do happen

I used to have winME. My olume control thing disapeared after awhile, thoug I still had sound. I've never had an OS rot as fast as winME. If you ever try win2k you will never go back. I urge you to backup all imported data and get win2k.

If he only has the onbaord sound, which is what it sounds like, he may have some difficulties removing it depending on what kind of computer he has. Lots of onboard sound chips can't be removed. They are usually marked clearly as to what they are. One of my computer has a chip that says the brand and has the chipset on it. It cannot be removed. Fortunetaly I have an audigy 2 platinum in my nice computer.

Some people don't know better, but I would hope that once you see that it's attatched and it isn't coming off easily. If I were him I would just get win2k and a real soundcard. The onboard soundcards are almost always shit. I have one system that has lots of nice things in it. My other two are useless, except one is always downloading me goodness without weighing down my good machine. I need a motherboard and cpu for a system I am building to host all my files to all of my computers. The point is that they all run win2k except my expensive machine, (winXPro) and they run it well. I've had one on for over a month without a crash. I despise everything about winME.

I totally agree, WinMe should never have been released. Setting up a small home LAN is cool, its much easier and faster to move/share files, plus you can play some good games against real opponents, Quake 3 and Doom are my favourites, i don't think i could ever get tired of killing my little sister :)
I've never tried 2k though i've heard lots of good things about it , 98SE was the best thing i had seen before i jumped to XP.

I'd still use 98se except it doesn't support ntfs partitions. And it seems it doesn't support drive 80gb and up very well eithor. I only have on HD that is smaller than 80gb and I don't feel like installing ata cards. Plus all my drives ntfs. I wish winXP and 2k could run the old games though. There is a fixed version of doom with control pad support that runs on xp though. I think you can download it for free from one of dooms websites.

Yeh NTFS beats FAT32 anyday. 98SE had a nice and compact feel to it plus it was easy to tweak. The only thing i dont like about XP is that it seem too 'big' (requires way too much RAM to run) and full of stuff i dont really want or am never going to use. XP is great for easy networking though !

Usually it will just automatically reinstall the drivers at startup, using the ones currently available. I think his install of WinMe has finally died is all. It happens to any microsoft OS eventually. Linux systems take a long time before they need reinstalled, if ever.

Look...for starters: Windows ME does not suck arse Second: it's probly something with your soundcard. If it's not an onboard card, try taking it out and outting it in another slot (windows will install it again automatically if it works)
Third: Start out with the build in Windows-drivers (especially if it's a soundblaster-card), and then install drivers only from the softwarepack...that sometimes makes the whole thing run better

Your the first person I've ever heard say they like WinME. To me and 90% of the people that have used it, it sucks. Nothing personal. Just my opinion and many other peoples. In a situation where the computer is acting screwy I've always found reformating works quite well. Any windows install disc will be able to format the drive. If like me, you have more than drive, you should store all the important data on the non-OS drive. Then you can format and all you need to do is install you OS and apps. I really do suggest win2k/XP/98se over winME, but if you like it I won't argue.

I wouldn't use XP if my hardware on my one machine worked properly on 2k. Every other machine I have uses win2k, including an 350mhz. It runs great to. I've never heard any good things about winME is all, including my own experiences. It was the last os with support for older games, and that was all it had going for it. Win2k networking is also very simple. With XP they just took 2k and made it all fluffy looking and added tons of useless feature for people that shouldn't even be buying a computer and cut some of 2k's best features. I love how in 2k you can click a file and play it on the side of the window.

okay i was NOT comfortable with taking apart my computer, so I said fuck it. I wouldn't of known where to begin. The soundcard was built in with the computer when I bought it, so I've never even seen it before, let alone a soundcard. I'll try a few more cheap windows repair tricks, but i think my sound card has bit the dust, and i'm tired of ME. Where can I get 2k?
Looks like music writing is temporarily halted.

I just got Win 2k from kazaa lite. Use the verified downloads in the kazaa web-browser. Then go to tools, then k-DAT and it should appear. Then right-click on the file and change the status to downloading. then close K-dat and Kazaa and re-start Kazaa again. that bad boy will start downloadin! Once finished, right click on the file and Extract to a folder(you should make one called windows 2000). Once you have done that, make a data disk from the files that are in the folder, but don`t use the folder itself. Then you will have Win 2k!! Oh and have 4 floppy disks so you can make a bootable setup disk and bobs yer uncle!!! Hope that helps
