hi,

i would like to know how you feel about copy protection
systems for cds. as i recently bought some new stuff
(kraftwerk) i got aware of some really wired systems.

emi protect their cds with a system called "copy controlled"
- what ever that means.

unfortunately i wasn't able to rip the cd to play some mp3s
im my car. :(

so, what do think about it? is the industry right?

Copy protection only annoy those who actually buy CDs, and
it's totally ineffective, as one can still copy the album
the analog way.

copy protection is only good as long as nobody figures out
how to get around it. however someone will always figure a
way around it.

how about you play the cd in a regular cd player but send
the line out to your computer and record it. might take a
little longer than just ripping it but you only have to do
it once.

Yes, that's what I meant by "the analog way".

you can still do a digital copy depending on the copyright
protection. One kind just put a data track on the beginning
of the cd so a pc cdrom drive couldn't read the data, so
people took a marker and blacked-out the data area and then
it could be copied. I don't think that a data track matters
on newer cd drives though. THat was sony's copy protection
they spent millions to come up with.

what annoys me is that the industry has spent the last 5
years trying to get people to play cds in their computers
and now they turn around and stick a knife in your back with
copy protection cds that are sometimes unplayable. its
bullshit.

I am boycotting all SACD's. I bought the Dark Side of the
Moon SACD wanting to hear it in 5.1 surround only to find on
the inside of the packaget that I need a special SACD
player. I was very pissed. I said nothing about that on
the outside of the case. So I could not return since I had
to open it to discover this. I thought that was very cheap
of the record company. At least I can still listen to the
regular stereo mix, but thats not the point. Damn copy
protection.

i'm boycotting copy protected cds... besides i know some
regular cd players cannot play it (and mine is crap)... i
wanted to buy Hail To The Thief and 100th Window but i
didn't since they were copy-protected.

but it spreads like a plague now, there are more and more of
them... i will buy less and less cds until i give up the
boycott... =/

the music world is going to hell with all this pirates vs.
majors war -_-

Do it the analog way, you can't get pissed off 'cos they're
making it hard to copy? If you bought vinyl, youl'd be
happy enough to 'tape' it or put it on a CD, what's the
world coming to!

here's a tip. get a program like cool edit pro. rip the
files....open them up in cool edit....then save them again
but remove the ID tag and 'other information'. when you
resave sometimes the copyright: yes will dissappear.

i had this problem when i bought my minidisc. if you want
to waste the time you can add that info on later.

I like having direct rips of my cd's in mp3 form, my living
conditions make fumbling around with cd's all to hectic
(there's not even enough room to walk in my bedroom), I own
90% of what I have on my computer, and it's annoying to have
to change the entire set up of my sound system just to
listen to a cd, (as the copy protection cd's don't run on my
computer, and a cd player isn't directly hooked up)

people will rip these tracks anyway, so why try and "make it
harder" to copy,

the copyright protection is sooo stupid.
it doesnt provent anything.
If I want my music on my computer I would just record it
into the computer.
