My first Aphex purchase

I picked up ICBYD today... never was a big fan but I have
to admit there are some nice tracks on here. Alberto
Balsalm, yes that goes without saying, I'd already heard
that one, and Come On You Slags! is great.

I think most of the reason I've avoided his stuff is his
catalogue is too large and intimidating. God help me, I can
see where a big shunk of money is going to be going...

I have a load of aphex cds, and most of em I find boring...
I just don't enjoy his music anymore...

Why not grab the Selected Ambient Works 85-92? Great album
as well as SAW Vol 2. I hold those in high regard.
Especially SAW2 , there is just something about it!

Or maybe AFX- Analogue Bubblebath 3?

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-07-20 20:07 [#00787801]

I just can't get into SAWII overall... some of it is
brilliant, but most is just crap imo...

even the almighty SAW85-92 is boring me as of late... :(

Yes, SAW 85-92 is next on my list. I love Delphium.

Funkmaster - stop peeing my fuck. I'm just getting into this
stuff. :D

you mean you haven't heard all this stuff? I just assumed
you meant you had the mp3's, but had never bought
anything... sorry man! APHEX TWIN RULES!!!! ;)

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2003-07-20 20:16 [#00787808]

It is easy to get tired of music. Just space out how often
you listen to it. That way when you have a "gem" CD it will
shine forever! :D

Delphium rocks for the record!

but I haven't listened to Aphex in months, and I still don't
have a desire to listen... :(

Haha, no, I've heard I guess a representative sampling of
his work - however most people who rip MP3s are asshats who
don't know what they're doing so hearing the CD for the
first time can be a real revelation.

well, Drukqs is still pretty awesome... I really should
listen to that one... that's probably his best imo...
Windowlicker is good, as is Come to Daddy... that's about it
for me now...

Fleetmouse you're in a great state. It's amazing when you
first start listening and hearing all his different styles.

Funk, I too and bored with most of his stuff nowadays.
Listen to the stuff you didn't listen to much.

All Aphex stuff is brilliant imo...

Except, if you take my advice, leave the Analogue Bubblebath
series till last....they're totally overrated and really
hard to find for no reason sometimes.

But the rest are awesome! Even Classics!

:)

analogue bubblebath - definitely overrated. why do people go
on about it so much, maybe when it was released it was
original, exciting etc..
but hearing it now, after windowlicker, drukqs, come to
daddy - its just shitty old techno.

my first aphex purchase was drukqs, totally turned me on to
him i can't understand why people say its crap or misguided
or whatever....its AMAZING!!!!!

offline nacmat on 2003-07-21 03:10 [#00788003]

I love all the analogue bubblebaths that I got... specially
number 3, but 1 is a classic and 4 is great too... really
harsh

just for the trouble you could go to to get them they seem a
bit of a disappointment.
polygon window is similar but much better especially the
first six tracks or so

offline WeaklingChild from Glasgow (United Kingdom) on 2003-07-21 03:18 [#00788009]

polygon window was one of my last aphex purchases. it has
some beautiful moments.
and some ruckin' techno a la quoth.

offline morge from United Kingdom on 2003-07-21 03:23 [#00788013]

i prefer the untitled one, and the track after it (i forget
the name right now).
quoth is cool but a tad boring for my liking

I am developing a physical craving for this album. It's
scary. I want to cook it in a spoon and inject it.

And all along I thought Aphex was a primitive form of
electronic music, like an australopithecine - boy was I
wrong - he's tasty!

the first i bought was saw 85-92 in 1994 i think, its still
my most listened to aphex. i have all his albums, and a few
rarities as well, all on lovely vinyl. to be honest, i'm
quite suprised at the opinion that people are getting bored
of it. maybe you have listened to it all too much?

just put drukqs on for the first time in about 6 months.
have only listened to it about 5 times since i got it.
people seem to hold it in high esteem, but i have never
thought that much of this one so i haven't really listened
to it. maybe i will click with it soon???

aphex was a real pioneer back in the day...so all the older
stuff sound really dated now. a lot of his polygon,
analogue, dice era stuff influenced much of modern-day
techno.

now he's just another wierdo (ae,u-ziq, squarepusher...)

my first aphex disc was richard d james album. i have to say
that, while i still enjoy his music now and then, i have
sort of burnt myself out on it.

i had a chance to buy Girl-Boy EP a while back, but it's
sort of pointless since i have the american version of RDJ
album.

i agree with neut that much of afx's earlier stuff was
top-notch. though i do enjoy hangable auto bulb and rdj
album myself. :-)

don't worry richard. i still love you! ...not like he cares
though :-D

My aphex collection:
SAW 85-92 (import version before reissue)
Classics (ditto)
Caustic Window - Compilation
Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves
Analogue Bubblebath 1, 3 & 4
SAW II
On EP
Ventolin EP and Ventolin Remixes EP
51/13 singles collection (just because i can't find donkey
rhubarb)
Mike n' Rich
I Care Because You Do
Richard D James Album
Come to Daddy
Windowlicker
2 Remixes by AFX (cd AND vinyl)
Drukqs

and no, i haven't bought smojphace or 26 mixes yet - i'm
broke. :-(
