For just plain sparse music...try Low. 'I Could Live In

I've recently heard "Barren Land" by "Nordhaunt" from a
compilation album called "Nord Ambient Alliance" on the
radio recently. It sounded really cold and atmospheric and
it might be the sort of thing you're looking for...
