yeah i was playing some random tunes with the guitar.. and i
came up with something nice.. so i typed it into the pc
hoping it to work out (i make tracks like this most of the
time) but it was in 6/8 time... its quite nice but i cant
make a good beat to it, just some drums and crashes..

well, it certainly appears to be a better way of working on
tunes. I just throw random beats and notes together, spend
days tweaking filters and waves to get everything sounding
juicy, then throw the whole lot onto my sampler and really
mess things up.

Could be the reason why the last project I completed was in
97 :(

nice idea...great melody...sounds like Mouse On Mars... :)

why don't you place some real slow eastern strings (instead
of the soft strings) in the background ? I have a feeling
that would go well with this.

it's a lot easier to do irl than with a computer. That's
because it's not based on a 4/8. The easiest way to start is
to make a melody/beat that goes like dieduliedU TA TA TA.
Hm, hehe, hard to explain through words. just fit 6 equal
notes in a measure of 4.

6/8 is basically like 2 bars of 3/4. BASICALLY.

but just remember, in 6/8 the accent is usually on the 1 and
the 4.... giving it a triplet feel.

Cfern off Confield is in 6/8 - at first anyhoo. I've never
tried waltzing to it though. :D

Coincidentally I'm working on a jazzy track right now that's
in 6/8.

the 5/8+7/8 is like this
1 2 3 4 5, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, 1 2 3 4 5, 1....etc.

I have made a track that shifts like this
first 5/8+7/8
then 6/8
then 3/4
then 12/16

i'll upload it to my site when i come home (in 25 minutes)

triplets are when you count
1 2 3 4
but are laying the 1 2 3 at the same time as 4/4

like this:

triplets are subdivisions of a beat... in 3.

so you have 1 2 3 4, but in each of these beats, you have
3s, instead of 2s or 4s.

That's more like a polyrhythm - there'd be a phase shift
from bar to bar, which is cool too. I love the way King
Crimson does that all over the Discipline album. Which
reminds me, there's a stick player at the jazz fest in an
hour - I should get off my ass and go see him.

but when you are doing 6/8, slowly, it can sound much like 2
bars of 2/4 with triplets, or just 2 bars of 3/4

i've been doing stuff in thirds, jazzwaltz type stuff.

try writing two loops of the exact same time length -- like
two of about 3 seconds -- but have one loop hit the third
notes -- (every .25 sec) and have one loop hit quarters --
(every .37 sec, or half of .75) then mix them together. It's
crazy but if you time it right it just may work. I've
written some tracks in 5/4 that some quite good.... they're
noisy as all fuck but they're good.

i like to write in any meter except 4'4

i like 5/4 6/8 and other's
