I just bought "A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure" by Matmos. It was an impulse buy, and probably one of the best ive made!
I listened to the whole CD before deciding to read the booklet, and found out it was made mostly with samples from surgery!
Its very cool. Reccommended!

its a nice album, i didnt know it was made that way tho, but honestly it sounds just like any other of their albums so they must've processed those samples pretty thoroughly
there was a period when i was totally into matmos - i bought all their albums (except 2 live ones - but i was sent these two by a member of this mb)
i havent listened to them in a while tho...i discovered many other brilliant artists, and there is just too little time to listen to it all

some people are comparing them with coil... i dont know about that tho, as i dont care for coil much some also call it industrial - perhaps there are some industrial parts here and there, but there's also a lot of other stuff, so it is pretty undefineable imo

no, I find emotion in it... but the sounds themself, are very machine sounding...
I recommend finding some demos first... try amazon.com, they usually have preview sound clips

tim hecker played at sonar on saturday/day...where akufen was playing
he is curently my favourite artist...he plays very minimalistic ambient, but so beautiful it cant be described properly
scanner - ambient kind of music as well, electronica with some organic sounds (check his "lauwarm instrumentals" and "nemesis" albums, they are an absolute bliss)
freescha - a lot like boc, perhaps even better
all these sound a lot like warp material, only much warmer

Matmos feels like a looser, dryer Mouse on Mars to me. House beats with silly samples, etc. The two solo albums I got, 'A Change to Cut is a Chance to Cure' and 'The West' were OK, but I like their work with Bjork and The Rachels a lot more. Their solo compositions just really seem to need some more elements, mainly melody and harmony.

"Their solo compositions just really seem to need some more elements, mainly melody and harmony"
could be...but they seem pretty creative and can easily transform their ideas into music, if nothing else they are really skilled

yea they are skilled, and that is why there stuff sounds so good when it is backing someone like Bjork. I have had a number of tracks that started as a beat, and I would be doing some really intricate stuff with that beat, cutting it up, adding fx etc. and it still wouldn't feel right. Then I would add a keyboard line that took five minutes and all of a sudden the song felt like it had some personality.

but it is true...their music lacks melody and harmony

matmos always uses messed-up things to make their records, that it was recorded surgical instruments etc. shouldnt surprise anyone, the new album comes out somewhat soon does it not(august or september)?
hey zeus or tolstoyed ill buy musick to play in the dark 2 from either of you, i alreayd have no. 1 and im a big coil fan so id grab that off either of you in a heartbeat.
