Never seen him mentioned here, is anyone else into his
books? I absolutely love them! Im currently reading Neither
Here Nor There and its hilarious, almost as funny as Down
Under.

I first encountered his work in an English exam. It was an
extract from his "Notes from a Small Island". I thought,
"What's this? Those retards at the exam board have actually
chosen some good literature rather than the usual, trite,
liberal nonsense?" I got a copy of the book and enjoyed it,
I also enjoyed the one where he is crossing the Appalachian
trail. I tried a couple more after that, but seem to have
gone off travel books in general. I find theme a little too
mundane.

yeah, i wouldnt have normaly gone for travel books but i
find his so entertaining. he seeks out the strange things
about the places he visits and he has such a cuastic sense
of humour. hes just released a book called, i think, a brief
history of nearly everything, covering i guess similar
things to stephen hawkings, but in his own style. im gonna
have to check it out, but it costs £20, ouch!

that was a walk in the woods that you read, probably the
weakest one i've read. if you are still interested i
strongly reccomend Down Under.

That's the one. I may grab a copy of Down Under next time
I'm at my parents' house.

His books are fucking great. They have me in tears
sometimes.

*waits for snide comment from a certain cunt on the board*

The one where he walked the appalachian trail is good too.

'Notes from a small island' and 'Neither here nor there' are
both great. 'A Walk in the Woods' and 'Down Under' I didn't
enjoy so much.

I read recently in New Scientist that he has just finished
book on science for the layperson. Here we are,
'A Short History of Nearly Everything'. I shall have to check this out.

Bill Bryson is brilliant. I love Notes from a Big Country.
He rips the States apart. He's like a travelling
non-political Michael Moore

My old man's a fan. Bill bryson goes hand in hand with
scotch and rye and chewing the fat and all that other shit
that most scottish people think is funny. I've got no idea
how he started appealling to the scottish hoi polloi. He
must have written a "hilarious" book about his travels in
scotland and the scum have been hooked ever since.

But fucking forget that. Check out the scottish guys in this
thread. Me, Mc_303_beatz and yerself. It sure beats all
those clog wearing dope-smokers.

In notes from a small island he says that the scots are
generous and that the have the highest percentage of
university graduates per capita in europe. Not that that
really denotes intelligence, especially with all the mickey
mouse degrees floating about today...

Dunno, out of 4 scots I'm reasonably matey with, only one is
tight. In fact, one of them gave me a can of lemonade today
when I was pissed off that we had run out of orange juice at
work.

i guess i shouldn't have gotten the translation of 'A Short
History of Nearly Everything'.

i feel slightly like i'm being talked to like a retard

i can't get over the fact that this idiot has to write out 9
billion trillion trillion trillion or something similar
every time, 945 does work better man

other than that it is a nice history of science

oh and it's not nearly the history of everything, since it
leaves out culture altogether. unless the history of
everything physical is ment

bryson's pretty good yeah, thought Short History was a great
little story on science history.

in his travel writing he likes to exagerate, over-react and
that can be funny but sometimes borders on being just a
little too self conscious for my likes to a point where he
tries too hard just for the sake of an anecdote. he's a
smart guy though, one can tell, and he's a pleasure too
read.

i prefer Paul Theroux's travel writing, I find him more
perceptive and insightful over the places he goes to. he
really knows how to get to the bottom of things.
