Well my 70 gig D Drive seems to have vanished. Going into
My Computer, it just ain't there. I'm not running around
screaming because I'm a backup hound and it's all on CD
anyway, I was prepared for an event like this, mostly. But
still, I AM grinding my teeth and pondering pulling my hair
out.

Help me. How can I make Windows detect it again, what
exactly do I do to get oladhgl kashg]0q3rehigr3q0j
in4o1gh4mno3nhg3oigMOTHERFUCKER

What REALLY irks me is I had some movies there that weren't
burnt to disc yet and now they're gone and it's hard to find
them again.

youll probably have to go into the bios and activate the
drive.

1. viruscheck
2. check cords and wireing
3. check BIOS setup
4. use fixdisk
5. check windows "system" setup - If it shows in Device
Manager, you can try just deleting it from there, and reboot

maybe the hard drive gnomes took it, like off the south park
episode, except they were underpants gnomes heheh

Cool, I'll try those out. I'm remarkably relaxed. After my
last hard drive crash, there was some property damage.

Is my data gone?

...yet another one bites the dust!!! EVERYTHING is defective
in this world, ach... i always think one day i might just
commit suicide because of something like that #_# or just go
out and become an ermit and never return again -_- yet i
know i won't do it, because i'm addicted, i don't know
anything but what i'm used to, modern life with computers
and other things like that, all my life is in computers and
music barely anything else... or maybe rather the real
reason is that there is NO WAY to escape it, like she says
"blood and sweat and tears will never stop", but i know i
won't leave because i'm too weak... rraaaaaahhhhhh *_*

......courage, Ophecks, we all know how it feels like... ;(

you can lose all hope, maybe you'll cure it but it will
return again etc... courage and good luck to you!!!! =(

never depend too much on anything. nihil, nihil, nihil.

lucky you.

Maybe I should replace ''remarkably'' with ''relatively''!
The last time, I didn't have anything backed up and I wanted
to grab a baseball bat, run outside, and rearrange some
faces. Bash some heads in.

This time, I'm pacing around my room and growling, mumbling
creative swear words... and I attacked my pillow, and I even
violently bit it. So I wouldn't say I'm RELAXED... it's just
that this time, I was ready for this GOD DAMN DEFECTIVE
MOTHERFUCKER.

I AM angry because I was planning to back up some more stuff
TONIGHT as a matter of fact. Asshole computer. I hope the
date isn't lost.

I couldn't get windows to spot a hard drive I had recently.
The BIOS detected it, it formatted ok in one computer but in
another, Windows simply had no clue.
Well, after about 10 hours of frustrated screwing,
unscrewing, pluging, formatting, installing, uninstalling,
sweating, swearing and kicking I realised that the drive was
being formatted on my XP machine as NTFS but I was trying to
read it on a WIN98 machine (FAT32), thus proving that I also
have no clue :/

Glad you know the merits of backing up files... so I'll run
you through the basics of data recovery

First, what is the problem with the hard drive

Does the BIOS see it?
Is it spinning up?
Does it try to spin up and stop?
ec, etc

Need more data, but I'm sure I can point you in the right
direction

What do I do to use the BIOS, I'm totally a n00b.

The Device Manager does NOT see it, I know that much.

Here's an error popup-

''The drive or network connection that the shortcut
''Bealtes.lnk'' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the
disk is properly inserted or the network resource is
available, and then try again''.

I didn't notice anything weird about it. If there is
anything it's cos it was grabbed with a camcorder, rather
than a still camera, but grabbed at 720x576 and cropped and
shrunk so I doubt that'd make a difference. It's just a pic
of me in front of my CD shelves. I think I'm about to cry :(

reboot your system and hit the appropriate F-key to take you
into the BIOS setup...

run a search on google for setting up a slave hard drive in
bios or something like that to get a little official
instruction. i douby your data is lost.

Thanks, lots of potential solutions there, I'm gonna try em
all. I DREAD to go messing around with the BIOS and control
panel, or opening up my PC case... I'm scared. :_-(

But I'm a man, not a mouse. Grr. I'm getting my data back by
hook or by crook. Not gonna be pushed around by a fucking
block of magnetic metal anymore.

If it has previously worked then there is no point in
touching the bios.

The first thing to check is the connections to both the
drive and the motherboard. With the temperature PC's run at
now cable creep is still a common occurance. In case you
don't know, all cable creep is the changes in temperature
causes the plastic on the connectors and the connector
blocks to expand and conract...over a period of time this
can cause the connector to work so loose it is no longer
recognised by the computer.

Just take the back off your comp and push the ribbon cable
connectors from you HD into the drive and motherboard and
you may be OK.

If it's not seen by the BIOS there are different reasons
than if it is that it might not be working... it's the first
step of many. I hate dealing with data recovery

Is it on the same IDE channel - that is, using the same
cable - as your main drive? Does it show up as being
detected in the POST messages? It's possible it's just a
loose power or data cable.

Shut down, open the case, disconnect the main drive, then
power up and see if you hear the 70 gigger spin up. It'll be
a whining sound easily distinguishable from the fans.

In the bios, make sure all your IDE drives are set to
auto-detect.

Keep us informed!

by a VIRUS?

i'm very curious why this keeps happening, i back up my

there's some kinda virus that happens when you do that, that
creates problems.

i dunno about all ya'll but when i use slsk a lot, it WRECKS

also i know jay built? i think he did, his own

I went into the BIOS, (standard CMOS setup) and I saw my D
Drives stats... showed the 70gig size. That seems odd
considering Windows doesn't see it... I didn't screw around
with anything after that. What EXACTLY should I do in that
setup...

But as of right now, I'm going to take the case off and
shove some wires around. God willing, it'll work. If not,
the next time you see me, I'll be a red stain underneath
Marion Bridge!

And my uncle built this thing for me for high school
graduation, and it's NOTORIOUSLY spazzy! I'm getting a new
one soon, I've had it. A nice fast POWERHOUSE that will take
all the energy from the Cape Breton Power Plant to run.

If you're getting it to spin up, there is a 99% chance you
can get useful data off it
Don't panic

Give us the full history on the drive. Did it work fine,
then just stop? Did it work fine, then you took it out and
put it back and it stopped? Did you take it out of another
machine where it worked and put it in your own and it
stopped?

If your BIOS detects the drive and reports capacity,
cylinders, etc etc then I'm pretty sure it's not knackered.
Must be a format problem.

What Windows version are you using?

I can see the missing HD in the device manager profile now,

doesn't detect any problems with it. Fuck you Windows, open

Then choose Storage/Disk Management and see what it says
